A lot of players might say that they feel like they have nothing to do after a while of playing this game. The truth is if you decide to delve inside the lore and the story and start living as your characters in-game, only then you’ll truly feel the full potential of this game. Let’s talk about Roleplaying in Final Fantasy.
A Beginner’s Guide To RP | Role-Playing – Final Fantasy XIV
Introduction To RP And Final Fantasy
Out of Role/Character (OOC, OOCly): This is when you are not portraying a character. You are OOC when you are not roleplaying. This is more or less the default condition of Roleplayers, as those that play 24 hours a day, seven days a week aren’t very prevalent, at least in my experience. To say things through your mouth and not your characters, use:

You can see people marked with RP next to their name, or maybe have it included in their name. In these times, do not forget to be fully connected with the in-game settings and your character. Some people even a step further by adding ** next to their sentences to indicate that they speak with a dialect. Do not that person that does not RP when you’re interacting with RP players around you.
Something like Erotic Roleplay exists in Final Fantasy too. Characters are usually doing what grownups do during this time. As far as I’m aware, doing this in public is a temporary bannable infraction, and those who create characters just for the purpose of ERP are typically not welcome in more serious RP communities. Just keep in mind that it accounts for roughly 2% of total RP in these sites, is private and between consenting adults, and can largely be disregarded.
Godmoding or GodModeing can be written both ways, but the concept is the same. This is when your emote commands another player to do something. So, if you wrote “I stab you and you die,” that would be deemed Godmoding. Careful though, this can be fatal for Roleplaying players(if you stab someone they might die, even if it is through the chat).
MetaGaming is where a lot of Roleplayers have an issue. Do not forget, that you are not your character! If you meet some other character in-game, and your own character is not aware of him, or even seeing him for the first time, you will need to properly introduce yourself. Metagaming is basically using outside information that you knew about, and you automatically pass it into your character(it should not work this way). When roleplaying, it’s critical to think about the knowledge your character knows rather than the facts you know.
There are various other forms of Roleplay too, like for some instances, combat. People roll the dice and let chance choose over the victor. So whatever makes you feel like it is proper or correct for the situation, go for it.
How To Dive Inside RP
The most difficult aspect of RP is generally getting started. From creating your character to defining a backstory, choosing a personality, locating a server, locating a group of people to roleplay with, and finally naming your character, there’s a lot to consider.
In Final Fantasy XIV, you should carefully study the game’s lore before selecting a Race, Clan, and Gender. When creating your RP character, the character creation screen goes over the essentials, and you should pay close attention to it. However, it’s worth noting that most of what’s said in these lore screens are related to tribal life, and it’s noted multiple times in the lore that the rise of cities is beginning to demolish these traditions.
If you’re designing your first character, a short backstory is preferable. While having a rich, dark past might be entertaining, your first priority should be determining your character’s personality, followed by his or her backstory. Even purposely leaving your past ambiguous until you figure out your character is quite fine, and it’s a fantastic strategy for first-time Rpers.
Your name is something that you’ll be constantly using, and in fact, your name defines your character. Here is a good link with a backstory of FF names on the official forum.
For you to be able to fully adapt your game style to an RP one, you must be surrounded by people doing the same thing. That is why, do your research, read comments and reviews, and make sure that you choose good quality RP Servers. The biggest ones right now are Balmung and Mateus(both in the US). There are tons of RP communities on Reddit and a lot of Discord groups.
After extended periods of inaction and boredom, Rping may be a fun and gratifying method to breathe new life into the game and will really make you fall in love with the game even more! It’s easier to think of RP as a never-ending, ever-evolving, enormous game of D&D, along with all the flaws it entails. Have fun!
