If you wish to have a complete Overcooked 2 experience, the best way to achieve that is to play it with someone in multiplayer.

Whether it’s local multiplayer, where you play with your friends on the console or PC, or online multiplayer, where you do the exact thing but online, this game will undoubtfully bring so much joy and fun times.

Now, if you’re wondering how to play in multiplayer mode in Overcooked 2, we have the answer to that question, so keep reading to find out.

Multiplayer in Overcooked 2: How To Play

There are three different modes in Overcooked 2: Story, Arcade, and Versus. Additionally, the game supports up to four online or local multiplayer players.

If you need some additional players, you can use online matchmaking and find someone there, except for the Story mode in which you need to add someone to your friend list. In any case, here’s how to play these four modes in multiplayer.

➲ Story Mode

To play local multiplayer, the second player needs to press the A (or the equivalent) button to join the lobby.

Or you may use Space for keyboard, X for PlayStation 4 and 5, and B for Nintendo Switch.

Once there are two or more players, simply go to the Story Mode and then you can choose to start a new game, load your saves, or continue from the last save. It’s simple as that!

Now, online multiplayer is a bit more complicated. First, you’ll need to become a host and invite your friend(s) to a lobby to play the Story Mode. Similarly, press the A (or the equivalent) button and choose the “invite” option.

You can even use one keyboard for two players!

Next, a lobby option will pop up. There, you’ll see your friend list, so just press the button to invite your friends, and they will receive the prompt to confirm that they want to join you.

Censored, for obvious reasons.

Once they accept your invite, they will join the lobby, and all what’s left is to go to the Story Mode and choose from one of the options there.

➲ Arcade and Versus Modes

Essentially, the Arcade Mode is best if you just want to have fun and play the game with someone, while Versus is best if you’re going to play against someone.

Both modes have three options for multiplayer: couch, online public, and online private.

  • Couch and Online private options work precisely the same as the story mode, which we explained above, so follow those steps to start playing.
  • Online public, however, works a bit differently, so we’ll show you how to play with random online players.

Once you select the Online public option, you’ll notice the third additional field that say “searching…”. If you’re on PC, you’ll receive a prompt saying that you need to add the game to the Firewall exception, so just accept it.

Then, just wait for the game to find more players, press the A button to accept, and you’re good to go. You can also vote for the theme or choose the random one.

Or you can even send emotes while you‘re waiting.
