The Chef has finally returned to Risk of Rain 2, and with him comes a brand new utility skill, Oil Spill. It’s flashy, it’s effective, and it’s locked behind one of the more frustrating challenges in the game: “You’ve Always Been Crazy.” But don’t worry, whether you’re struggling to hit airborne enemies or just want the fastest method possible, this guide has you covered with a bunch of reliable strategies from both my own experience and the community.

How to Unlock Oil Spill Fast

CHEF is the fan-favorite survivor who made his debut in the original Risk of Rain, and now he’s back in RoR2 with a whole new moveset. One of the highlights is Oil Spill, a powerful utility skill that lets you dash forward with spinning blades, shredding enemies in your path. It’s not just stylish, it’s essential for crowd control and mobility.

To unlock Oil Spill, you need to complete the “You’ve Always Been Crazy” challenge, which requires hitting five airborne enemies with a single use of Roller, Chef’s default utility skill. Sounds simple, right? Not quite, unless you know a few tricks.

In this guide, I’ll break down:

  • The standard method using Wisps
  • Faster and easier cheese strats
  • Lesser-known tips from the community
  • What worked for me (and how I got it on Stage 1)

Let’s get greasy.

Standard Method: The Wisp Roller

If you want to go the traditional route, here’s a consistent setup:

  1. Enable Artifacts: Use Command, Kin, and Swarm.
    • Command lets you choose your items.
    • Kin forces only one enemy type to spawn (we want Wisps).
    • Swarm doubles the enemy count, more targets to hit.
  2. Reset Until Wisps Spawn: Start runs and reset until Wisps are your Kin enemy. They float mid-air and are ideal for this challenge.
  3. Pick Survival Items: Use Command to grab a Repulsion Armor Plate and a healing item so you don’t die while lining things up.
  4. Start the Teleporter Event: Let the Wisps pile up, ideally near a high location.
  5. Charge Up Roller: Fully charge Chef’s Roller, then aim for the biggest clump of airborne Wisps you can find.
  6. Try Again If Needed: If you miss the 5-hit mark, gather more and try again. You have multiple chances during a run.

Better Way: Yes, Chef! Trick

Here’s what worked for me: I equipped the “Yes, Chef!” upgrade to Roller. The spinning blades count as multiple hits, so the window for hitting airborne enemies is way more forgiving.

I got it on Stage 1 by hitting a Geep, which split into two Gips mid-air. A quick dash through them and — boom, achievement unlocked. No parkour, no stress.

More Cheese Strats

Here are some clever methods shared by the Risk of Rain 2 community:

  • Artifact of Swarms Alone: A few players had success just using Swarm + Kin, letting Wisps build up, then dashing through them once enough spawned.
  • Primordial Cube (aka “Black Hole”): Use this equipment to pull a bunch of airborne enemies into a tight cluster, then dash through them. Works best with Swarm active.
  • Halcyonite Cheese: Hit the Halcyonite 5 times. For some reason, it counts as airborne, and yes, it works.
  • Captain Shock Pylon Buddy: One player used Captain’s Shock Pylon to juggle enemies mid-air while Chef lined up the dash. Not necessary, but a fun coop strat.

Wrap-Up

No matter which route you take, the legit way, the cheese way, or the “Yes Chef!” shortcut, unlocking Oil Spill in Risk of Rain 2 is totally doable with a bit of patience and setup. Once you’ve got it, you’ll open up a whole new level of damage potential for Chef. And hey, if this guide helped you out, consider sharing it with your fellow survivors. Chef deserves to shine!
