What they don’t tell you in racing games is that automatic shifting is slower compared to manual shifting. Casual gamers won’t care too much about manual, as they don’t want the additional hassle of having to deal with convoluted controls. But for car afficionados, the option for manual is immediately switched on.
F1 22 decides when to shift your gear depending on your RPM. However, there are certain situations in the game where the game will shift your gear for you and in turn, make you lose rather than win. This can be incredibly frustrating to players, which is why manual is often chosen to avoid unnecessary gear shifts.
In order to effectively drive manual, you’ll have to learn how to upshift effectively. At the bottom of your HUD, you can see the RPM and lights above it. This is your indicator of when to shift. The ideal opportunity to shift is usually at 11,000 RPM. If you can’t see the RPM though, that’s fine. Another way to indicate when to shift is when you see the purple light come on.
The purple light is your primary indicator of when to shift in races. The RPM is another indicator, but that is more for advanced players due to its size.
Another way to indicate when to shift is by listening to your engine and the noise it’s making. This is again for advanced players who are knowledgeable in cars.
While upshifting is a great way to accelerate and gain speed, downshifting is a great way to slow down. But why would you slow down? Well, some corners require very sharp turns, and going too fast can result in a crash. Downshifting helps in achieving these sharp turns, as you can slow down dramatically, enough to make these turns.
Downshifting is just as important as upshifting, but it is very difficult to master. Same as upshifting, you can pay attention to the lights on your HUD. Except for this time, you have to wait till all the lights go out to downshift. But it doesn’t stop there. To downshift effectively, you have to downshift every time the lights go off until the number reaches zero, and the lights go off very quickly so you yourself have to be just as quick.
There is another way to slow down just as quick as downshifting: engine braking. This technique is hard to master and requires a ton of practice. Basically, instead of waiting for the light to go out before downshifting, you downshift just before the last light goes out. This will help you slow down faster than regular downshifting.
However, doing this wrong will result in you losing control of your car and going into a spin when you turn a corner. Be sure to practice if you want to master it.
