Basics and Abilities

Dian Wei Gameplay

Dian Wei is a strong Fighter capable of high damage output, making him best suited for the Clash Lane and Jungler roles. He has high move speed, lifesteal, crowd control immunity, and fast attack speed. On top of that, he can also apply Slow to enemies. He’s quite a beast!

However, Dian Wei in Honor of Kings isn’t without his weaknesses, of course. He has a lot of trouble with heroes who can kite him, since he has short range. You also can’t sustain for too long, as you rely on your abilities to have lifesteal. This means you’ll eventually need to retreat to a safe spot if fights go on for too long.

Dian Wei Gameplay

Speaking of Dian Wei’s abilities, let’s take a look at what they all are:

  • Mounting Rage (Passive) – You gain up to 20 stacks whenever you defeat enemies or get assists. Each stack increases your Physical Attack.
  • Holding on to Sanity (Ability 1) – Dian Wei removes any crowd control effects on himself. Additionally, he greatly enhances his Movement Speed and his next Physical Attack. The buffs last 3 seconds.
  • Outburst (Ability 2) – Dian Wei quickly stomps on the ground dealing Physical Damage to any nearby enemies and applying Slow on them for 2 seconds. If the stomp hits enemies, Dian Wei also gets a huge buff to his Attack Speed and gets Lifesteal for 3 seconds.
  • Leap of Fury (Ultimate) – Dian Wei leaps and smashes the ground with his axe. Deals a large amount of True Damage to enemies and also applies Slow on them for 3 seconds. Additionally, Dian Wei gains True Damage on all his attacks. The buff lasts 5 seconds and is based on the enemy’s Maximum Health.

With the basics laid down, let’s go over Dian Wei’s playstyle.

Playstyle Breakdown | Complete Guide to Playing as Dian Wei

Dian Wei Gameplay

Generally speaking, Dian Wei is a very simple character to grasp. As you can see from the ability descriptions, they’re all pretty simple and straightforward. This makes him a fairly solid character for beginners, especially if you want to get used to the jungle role.

You can sustain yourself for relatively long fights thanks to Outburst’s buffs. Your other abilities allow you to speed up and hunt down melee-ranged heroes with relative ease. Your damage output as Dian Wei in Honor of Kings also gets a great buff if you manage to hit your Ultimate, thanks to the True Damage bonus!

However, Dian Wei is simple to a fault and has very few tricks up his sleeves. While his overall kit sounds extremely overpowering on paper, he has a lot of issues with players who actually know what they’re doing. Any ranged heroes can easily kite him and keep him at bay before he can do anything. You’ll have to rely on ambushes to even stand a chance against ranged heroes, frankly.

Dian Wei Gameplay

You have to know when to pick and choose your fights. Avoid over-extending fights if you can’t get your lifesteal going to sustain yourself.

This overall makes Dian Wei a character best suited to low-level play. You’ll have a lot of success playing him as a beginner, and he’s a fantastic choice for learning the game and how to play jungle. He just is too simplistic overall in higher-level play so he loses out to other heroes with more versatile kits.
