Once Human: Complete Fishing Guide (Unlock Blueprints, Deviants, Rare Fish & More)

Become the best fisherman in the game!

In this looter shooter multiplayer survival game called Once Human, players must do everything to survive the monstrous beasts lurking in the post-apocalyptic city. This includes even hunting for your own food. Fishing is a great method to get some meat to ensure your belly stays full enough to battle enemies. Here’s everything you need to know about fishing in Once Human.

Complete Fishing Guide (Unlock Blueprints, Deviants, Rare Fish & More)

Fishing is one of those side activities that allows you to get your hands on the best food bonus the game has to offer. This side activity is not even too demanding, and many players deem it as a relaxing escape after all the chaos happening on the ground.

This ultimate fishing guide will cover:

  • The requirements
  • Basics of fishing
  • Catching the Eel Deviant
  • Northern Pike Blueprints
  • Storing the Fish
  • Best Fish for Meals
  • Fish Events

Here’s the Table of Contents in case you’re looking for something specific:

So, let’s get started with the requirements.

Requirements

In requirements, we’ll tell you everything you need to pick up before you head to the sea and start fishing.

  • Fishing Rod: Start with the most essential and easiest to acquire which is the fishing rod. You’ll want to get your fishing rod by crafting it through the supplies workbench.
Crafting fishing rod in Once Human

You can craft yourself a fishing rod with only 10 copper ingots and 20 logs. These are ingredients that you’ll most likely have on you, and if not, they are easy to acquire.

  • Bait: The next obvious thing you’ll need is some bait. You can get some by interacting with vendors near the docks that look like they’re fishing themselves. One of these vendors is named Margerie.

She should have a variety of bait available for you to choose from.

She’ll have dough fish bait, regular bait, and bait formula if you’d like to craft them yourself.

Deviant for Bait

Another method to get some bait is through the help of a Deviant. The Frog the Leaper Deviant should help you get some more base once you place it inside your base. This frog deviant will help you slowly make universal bait for you which can be used to catch all types of fish.

Frog the Leaper Deviant in Once Human

You can find Frog the Leaper Deviant with the help of our guide on How to Get Frog the Leaper Deviant. There are multiple spawn points to get the Frog Deviant from and this guide will cover all of them so you can use the approach best suited for you!

Basics of Fishing

Now let’s talk about exactly how to fish. First off, you’ll need to look for the best spot to go fishing. Luckily for you, we can tell what one of those spots is.

The fishing docks are the best place to fish. The coordinates are Broken Delta (5712, -6663)

Once you head over to the place:

  1. You’ll need to equip your fishing rod
  2. Then press the left mouse or interact to deploy.
  3. You can then Press R to add a bait. You can choose between the various baits that you’ve unlocked.

  1. The next and final step is when you’re ready for casting. When you’re ready, press and hold the left mouse click to cast the line and throw it into the river.

You really don’t need to do anything after this and instead, just wait for the fish to take the bait. There’s no clicking or anything of that sort required until the icon at the bottom of the screen starts glowing blue and telling you to turn the reel.

Pulling the fish and catching it

This means that your bait has caught something. When you see this sign, you’ll want to immediately click, hold the line, and basically pull away from the fish.

If you pull away, the bar on the bottom left will slowly fill up and if it fills up all the way, you’re going to hook the fish. But, if the bar goes to the left, you might lose your fish.

Fishing in Once Human
  • The left side says “escape” and the right side says “hooked”. You’ll need to pull your hook enough that the bar fills up all the way to the right.
  • Similarly, if your fish swims in a certain direction, you’ll want to shift your camera view in the opposite direction. For instance, if the fish swims to the right, shift your camera to the left side and vice versa.
  • While reeling in the fish, you’ll also want to consider the second bar below the “Escape-Hooked” one.
Fishing in Once Human
  • The left side says “Break” and the right side says “Slack”. This bar determines if your line is about to break and mostly only happens if your struggle with the fish takes too long. The bar will start from the right and slowly go down no matter what. So, you might also want to be quick.
  • The longer struggle typically happens with the bigger fish, and you’ll notice that you can catch smaller ones much faster. So, all you need to do is finish this minigame as fast as possible by pulling the line away from the fish. This will help you secure it.

Best Bait

If you are confused about which bait to choose, we’ll tell you that there’s no need to think long and hard. The most basic fish bait does the job well as long as you follow the fishing tips and steps mentioned above. This way you’ll never lose a fish while using this bait.

We also recommend the bait that your Frog Leaper deviant generates. The universal bait helps you catch fish even faster, making it easier to complete the fishing minigame.

When the Fish don’t take the bait

This might happen to you at times, and it might also feel frustrating. You’re probably wondering when is it time to give up that round and try again.

If a fish doesn’t take your bait after 10-15 seconds, simply press escape and recast your line. You’ll have much better luck the second time and it should only take a couple of seconds before a fish bites onto your bait.

Catching the Eel Deviant

While fishing, you might get a chance to catch the Electric Eel Deviant if you’re lucky.

This deviant will pop up randomly with any type of bait that you use. Aside from the Docks, there are other spots with a chance of catching this deviant. You can check out our guide on How To Get Electric Eel Deviant Fast to learn more!

The Electric Eel works in the Territory section where it provides power to generators. If you have a base filled with defenses that need electricity to run, you’ll definitely want one of these deviants in your base.

Turrets in Once Human

For instance, if you have a solar panel (which typically provides 20W power), you can only power up three turrets. (6 watts for each turret so 18W in total).

But when you add the electric eel to your base, your solar will go up to 26 Watts, allowing you to power up 4 turrets instead.

This makes the Eel an essential deviant. It’s a good idea to assign the Eel to all your panels to maximize your base’s defense.

Northern Pike Blueprints

Catching the Northern Pikes, specifically has its own set of advantages to them. When you catch a bunch of Spikes, you can turn them into a Blueprint before they spoil.

To do this, you’ll need to head over to the Northwest. The coordinates are: Red sands (3375, -1168)

You’ll find a fishing Dock at this location which is similar to the other Docks. You’ll also find the vendor named Margerie here and she’ll have a bunch of more baits for you. In addition to the baits, she’ll have two special blueprints.

One of those blueprints is the Northern Pike Blueprint.

Every Northern Pike you’ve caught, you can use here to create a very useful melee weapon that you can use in PvP to stun your enemies.

Best Location to catch Northern Pike

In every biome, you’ll have a chance of encountering a certain type of fish. If you want to get your hands on some Northern Pike for the Blueprints, the best place to look is the docks in Meyer’s Market.

Storing the Fish

Now that you’ve caught a bunch of good fish, you’re probably thinking that you’re done here and the fish are safe in your inventory. However, that’s not true because the fish in your inventory will start to rot (just like regular fish would) and you’ll need to store them in a cool place, typically a fridge.

You’ll need to visit your fridge at your base and store all the fish that you’ve caught inside.

Fridge in Once Human

Especially the ones you’ve caught from the surge of fish events. Storing them in a fridge will help them last longer. If you leave the fish as it is without storing them, they’ll spoil after 24 hours, but in the fridge, however, they last a total of 10 days.

Best Fish for Meals

While catching fish is fun and great, there are certain species of fish that you should focus your energy on during your adventures. This is because some fish give better bonuses than others. They also tend to make better meals.

For instance, you can make Pan-Fried Fish and browse through the effects of the different fish used in this dish

For instance, the Sea Bass can increase firing speed by 10% when used to make Pan-Fried Fish. There’s also mining speed with the sunfish and Logging speed with the Bighead Carp.

We recommend that you get the Angel Fish since it slightly increases your critical damage and the Pompano which increases your weak spot DMG (best used during PvP and PvE).

Memetic Upgrades

You’ll also want to focus on specific memetic upgrades like the Kitchen Set: Gourmand which boosts all the base effects of dishes by 30%, increases their duration by 50%, and reduces crafting time by 50%.

All of this will make your Pan-Fried Fish dish even better!

Storing Meals

If you leave the food out even after cooking the dish, it will still spoil after 24 hours. But if you make something like the Canned Seafood in oil, it will stay fresh forever.

The canned seafood will give you a critical strike damage bonus and can be stored inside your base for as long as you keep it there. You can store a lot of different ones which will make it easier to access them when the need arises.

Fish Events

Always check your map from time to time looking for party events that give you a surge of fish. They can pop up anywhere in the world.

Fish event in Once Human

One of the recent events happened in the Southern part of the area. Sometimes if you find the Logging beaver deviant that randomly pops up, you can go ahead and pick one up. You can even check out the rewards on the map.

The rewards from the most recent one included:

  • White Cichlid
  • Lionhead Cichlid
  • Golden Cichlid
  • Jade Eye Cichlid

These are types of fish that only pop up during the events making them rare. So ensure that you catch as many as possible.

The trick to finding more events

If you don’t have a fish event on your map and you’re eager to participate in one immediately, the trick is to go over to your teleportation tower and transfer to another world.

After that, you can search the map again for a Fish Event.

Displaying your Fish

If you’re a Trophy Hunter, you can display your bigger and more rare fish inside a tank in your base.

If you want the blueprint for a Display Tank, all you have to do is:

  1. Go to Memetics
  2. Go to the Building tab
Building in Memetics in Once Human
  1. You’ll find “Display Facility” under “Gear Storage.”

Here, you can craft yourself a nice Fish Tank to display your big catches!
