Black Myth Wukong: Complete Combat Guide | Everything You Need To Know

The bosses don’t stand a chance!

Black Myth Wukong has a bit of a reputation already for having tough combat. This is because of the combat’s resemblance to the Souls series, especially when it comes to bosses. While it can be tough, you have a lot of different mechanics that you can master.

In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know related to combat. We’ll also provide you tips and tricks that will help you fight even the toughest of enemies. Without further delay, let’s get into it!

Complete Combat Guide

The combat in Black Myth Wukong goes hand in hand with the skill tree system in the game. The more you upgrade your skills, the stronger the overall combat will be.

If you do not have a good grasp of the system, you might want to check out our skill tree complete guide.

Combat System Stats

Starting off, we’ll look at some basics that will provide you with an overview of the combat system in Black Myth Wukong.

Your character has some basic stats that are directly linked to your character and overall experience with the game. These are the following stats:

  • Stamina
    • Impacts how much you can dodge and sprint
  • Martial Arts
    • Influences the amount of damage that you deal
  • Survival
    • Related to your health and overall survivability.

Stamina and Martial Arts in particular will directly impact any attacks that you use in Black Myth Wukong. On the other hand, Survival is related to any attacks that you take.

In general, you want to upgrade these skills as you progress through the game.

Combat Stances

In Black Myth Wukong, you can use one of three stances at any time you wish. You can toggle between these stances with the press of a button.

There are three types of staff stances you can use, each with their unique fighting style. They are the following:

  • Smash Stance
    • Quick hack and slash type fighting style
    • Can be used to deflect projectiles
  • Pillar Stance
    • Elongate the staff and do some really heavy attacks
    • Can be used to dodge certain attacks while leaving you vulnerable to others
  • Thrust Stance
    • Poking and stabbing fighting style
    • Useful for hitting enemies from a distance.

There is no clear winner in any of these stances and it is complete up to preference. If you ask different players which stance is useful, they’ll all tell you different things.

However, most players have said that they only tend to use one stance at a time. So, we recommend you select this one stance and focus on upgrading it instead of the other stances.

Combat Bars

There are two types of combat bars that play a crucial role in Black Myth Wukong’s combat. The first of these are Focus Points.

You can find Focus Points in the bottom right corner of your screen. Consuming one focus point allows you to do one heavy attack. You can then build your focus points back up by doing light attacks.

Heavy attacks are crucial as they are your main damage dealers in Black Myth Wukong, especially against bosses.

However, you only have a limited number of Focus Points. You can get more by upgrading the relevant upgrade in the Staff Stances skill tree.

Ideally, you want to have long combos when you’re playing Black Myth Wukong. So, a mixture of light and heavy attacks is ideal. So, be sure to make the best use of your focus points for the best results.

The other combat bar that you’ll have is Mana. Mana is a crucial resource related to the magic system in Black Myth Wukong.

That’s right, you can actually use spells in the game too. There are many useful spells in the game that you’ll unlock as you progress through the game.

However, keep in mind that you can only have four spells active at a time.

So, we’ll point out some really useful spells in the game. We recommend that you use the following Spells:

  • Immobilize
  • Cloud Step
  • Rock Solid.

Immobilize is a powerful spell that will freeze enemies even if they are mid air. You can then damage them and use your heavy attacks without interruption. It also gives you an opportunity to heal and catch your breath.

The great thing about this spell is that it also works on bosses. However, more powerful bosses can break free of it sooner. To make the best of it, use it when the enemy is downed, staggered or exhausted.

You’ll be able to keep them binded for longer.

After that, we have Cloud Step which is your main evasive spell. You can use this spell to dodge enemies by going through them. At the same time, you will leave behind a decoy that will trick enemies as you enter a Mist State. You will be invisible in this Mist State.

This gives you a fantastic opportunity to do a damaging heavy attack as you return to combat.

Since there is no traditional dodging system in Black Myth Wukong, this spell can help you out when you’re crowded by multiple enemies or overwhelmed by a boss.

Finally, we have the Rock Solid spell which can be used as a block to parry enemies. It’s a defensive spell that basically turns you into a rock. If you time it just when the enemy is about to hit you, you can parry enemies and bosses.

This gives you the perfect opportunity to counterattack and punish them.

Keep in mind that all these Spells use Mana, and you only have a limited amount of it. So, be sure to use it well.

To get your Mana back, you will need to rest at a Shrine. Be sure to also upgrade your favorite spells in the skill tree.

Transformations

Transformations also play an important role in Black Myth Wukong’s combat system. There are many transformations that you’ll unlock as you progress through the game. We won’t go through all of them since there are so many.

There are two types of transformations that you should know about. The first of these are the lesser spirit transformations that are only a one time use.

You activate these transformations, use their attack and the transformation is instantly over. They do not take up any slot and can be activated pressing the LT + RT buttons together.

You use Qi to use these transformations as opposed to Mana.

The other type of transformations are sustained transformations. These major transformations allow you to transform into a creature or period for a set period of time. They have unique abilities or fighting styles that you can use for different purposes.

These transformations don’t last forever and will end when either the second health bar depletes or the Might bar runs out. The Might bar runs out progressively with time.

These transformations also have long cooldowns, so be sure to use them effectively. Be sure to also use the Transformations skill tree to buff any specific transformation that you like.
