Black Myth Wukong features many iconic boss fights that will test players to their limit. After these challenging battles, you’ll want to get the boss souls. However, at the start, you’ll find that you aren’t able to absorb the boss spirit, with the game saying you need guidance.

How to Get Boss Soul
After you’ve defeated a boss in Black Myth Wukong, you’ll see a glowing boss soul that you can pick up. However, when you try to pick it up towards the start of the game, you’ll fail to pick it up.
Instead, you’ll get the message that’s shown in the image below.
This is because you need to access a particular item in the game’s story. Let’s see how you can get it. Don’t worry, you can leave the boss soul as you’ll be able to retrieve it without having to return to the same spot.
Obtain Blessed Gourd
Starting off, you’ll need to get your hands on a particular item. This is the Blessed Gourd which is an upgrade that allows you to possess boss souls. You’ll also be able to reclaim the boss souls that you weren’t able to before.
So, starting off head to the Snake Trail that can be found in Bamboo Grove. You can fast travel here by using any Keeper’s Shrine in Black Myth Wukong.
If you don’t have the option to fast travel to this Shrine yet, it simply means you need to progress through the story until you get here.
After you reach the Snake Trail Shrine, go up the stairs that you see on the right. After that, turn right just before the bridge and you’ll see an NPC there.
Talk to this NPC and he will give you the Blessed Gourd. Now you’ll be able to get any boss souls that you come across in Black Myth Wukong.

Reclaim Boss Souls
To get the boss souls you haven’t been able to yet, simply go to any Keeper’s Shrine. Over here, you’ll see a new option that says ‘Retrieve Spirits’.
Select this option and you’ll be able to see all the boss spirits that you missed. Hold the button to retrieve them and you’ve now gotten all of them!
