Dandy's World: Complete Blackout Guide (Percentages, Light Sources & More)

To summarize my guide, I’ll explain what blackouts are in Dandy’s World, the factors that can increase or decrease their occurrence, and some tips on how to survive them. I’ll also answer the question: What’s the highest light source you can achieve in-game? I recommend you stick around for the whole guide—you might learn something new!

Complete Blackout Guide (Percentages, Light Sources & More)

A blackout is an event that can happen in Dandy’s World. When it occurs, the power goes out, plunging the floor into complete darkness. While it might not seem like a big deal at first, combined with twisted sets like Pebble Scraps and Goo, blackouts can become quite dangerous, potentially ending your run.

Blackout Percentages & Numbers

Blackouts can start as early as Floor 3, beginning with a 5% chance of occurring. This chance increases by 2% per floor, up to a maximum of 30%. However, this chance can be reduced if you select the Electrician card. With Electrician, the blackout chance only increases by 1.5% per floor, and the maximum chance is reduced to 25%.

In contrast, Twisted Brightney has a special ability that increases the blackout chance whenever she appears. If a blackout doesn’t occur naturally, her presence will roll the chance again.

Light Sources to Counter Blackouts

Fortunately, all Toons produce a small amount of light during blackouts. If a Toon has a lightbulb icon next to their abilities on the selection screen, it means they generate more light than others. Currently, three Toon produce extra light: Astro with a blue light, Vee with a green light, and Brightney with significantly more light.

There are two ways to increase the light radius during blackouts:

  • First, the card upgrade Spark Plug increases the light radius for all Toons, though the effect is not dramatic.
  • Second, there is a trinket called Spare Bulb, which you can unlock by achieving 100% research on Twisted Brightney. This trinket increases the blackout light radius by 25% and also boosts the light radius of light-producing Toons.

Here are a few comparisons of how different Toons light up during blackouts. Having Brightney or Vee on your team is essential if you want to avoid damage during blackouts, as they reveal all Twisted enemies on the floor. This gives you a valuable clue about their locations before you even step out of the elevator.

Additional Tips & Secrets about Blackouts

A secret tip that not many players know: you can use windows to your advantage during blackouts. Looking through a window makes it easier to see, giving you a clearer vision of the floor. This trick also works with Roger—using his head as a window can improve your visibility during blackouts. While these tips aren’t foolproof, they can be helpful in the right situations.

Highest Light Source in the Game?

Finally, you might be wondering: what’s the highest light source you can achieve in-game? It’s actually pretty straightforward. Use any light-producing Toons and equip the Spare Bulb trinket on everyone in your team, including yourself. This gives you an additional 25% blackout light radius per Spare Bulb, plus the bonus from the Spark Plug card. With this setup, your light radius can become impressively large!
