This Could Ruin The Dead Space Remake

Or maybe not…?

With the Dead Space Remake close to release, a lot of people are excited of the prospect of revisiting the iconic USG Ishimura with one of survival horror’s most respected video game protagonist, Isaac Clarke (a fully voiced Isaac Clarke, by the way). Dead Space Remake completely overhauls the original game and adds a lot of things, but some of these additions and changes aren’t well received by some fans.

While some may see the addition of cutscenes and a fully voiced Isaac Clarke as a welcome change, certain fans of the Dead Space fanbase are against these changes, and often bring up points to why it could ruin the magic of the first Dead Space.

A YouTuber by the name of Proxidist airs his two grievances about the changes in Dead Space Remake. One of which is the cutscene that shows where Isaac Clarke gets ambushed by an Infector (the Necromorph that infects dead bodies to create Necromorphs) and infects the dead body Isaac was looking for.

Proxidist states that this 44 second cutscene (yes, a 44 second cutscene) is too long and takes away control from the player. He then brings up a very good point that the original game lets you remain in control of Isaac during this interaction, letting the player move Isaac around instead while the whole infecting process was occurring.

He also goes on to say that cutscenes in this game will kill repeat playthroughs, stating that games like Dead Space are supposed to be “super replayable”. He also brings Resident Evil Village into the mix as well, airing out his frustrations at having to carry baby Rose to her crib every time he has to go through a playthrough.

Another thing that could potentially ruin the Dead Space Remake, according to Proxidist, is Isaac Clarke being fully voiced. Isaac Clarke having a voice in the Dead Space Remake is a personal gripe with him, but it’s a shared gripe with other fans of the game. While some jump for joy upon hearing Gunner Wright’s iconic voice and scream, others like Proxidist loathe it.

But it’s not for bad reason, he actually brings up a very good point on why it might ruin the game (for him and for others). In the original Dead Space game, Isaac Clarke was as silent protagonist the whole time he was fighting for survival in the Ishimura and on Aegis VII. With the exception of heavy breaths and pained screams, Isaac Clarke did not speak a word during the whole fiasco.

The gripe comes from having the immersion once again taken from the player, stating that players like himself were able to put themselves into Isaac Clarke’s shoes because of his silent demeanor. I won’t lie and say that this is something I do on repeat playthroughs of the original game, so I can definitely see where he is coming from.

However, we have to remember that these are the opinions of one man, and possibly a group. It does not mean that the game is ruined for you, it just means the game is ruined for them. Opinions exist, and we should all learn to respect that not everyone is going to have the same opinions as you.
