Don’t Starve, and later Don’t Starve Together is one of the early survival crafting games before the genre became a cesspool of early access monstrosities. It’s a game with a simplistic, but the stylized art style and deceptively complex gameplay and mechanics.
For a new player though it might be a bit too much for some on their first world since there are a lot of things you need to keep an eye out for.
From resources to enemies and planning for winter it can get a bit confusing so in this guide, we’ll show you some beginner tips and tricks.
Starter Guide For Don’t Starve Together
Don’t Starve Together is a crafting survival game and you can play it with a friend.
For the purpose of this guide though we’ll be treating it like you’re playing a single-player game, don’t worry the idea of resource management and such can still carry over to multiplayer.
Now let’s go with the tips and tricks for new players!
We’ll also be using Wilson since it’s everyone’s starting character and he can grow a beard that will help later!
Early Game
Once you get into a new world, you’ll need to go gather resources. Here is a list of the basic necessities you need to gather:
- Get as many twigs and grass, you’ll need at least 20 of each
- Look for flint as well since you can use it to make a pickaxe which in turn can get you more flint!
- Pick some carrots and berries as well for food.
- Punch butterflies to get their wings which can restore your HP!
Once you make a pickaxe we’ll need gold to make a Science machine.
- Finding gold: To find gold, you’ll first need to find the Mosaic biome which is usually near the spawn. Look for a place that has random patches of different ground textures. There you can find boulders and boulders with gold. Here, you can harvest gold, rocks, and minerals.
- Chop down wood: Prepare an axe to chop down wood which you will also need for the science machine.
Science Machine
Once you’ve made a Science machine you can then use it to prototype some items. Once you prototype something you can then craft it without being near the station.
Make sure to make a backpack first to get more inventory space.
You’ll also need a shovel to dig up tree stumps and a spear to defend yourself!
Darkness
Always make sure that you have some grass and twigs to craft a torch. If you’re not lit at night you’ll get attacked and easily die so be careful.
A campfire can be made but it requires more resources and isn’t that great in the early game unless you have a lot of meat to cook.
Torches let you still move around so that you can still gather resources, just keep another one just in case it runs out!
Armor and Tools
- Starter Armor
With 2 ropes and 8 logs, you can make a Log suit, the first armor you can get.
This can save you from a lot of pain when you get attacked. It’s always good to stay as armored as possible when fighting.
- Hammer
Remember to also craft a hammer which you can use to destroy structures.
You can even use it to destroy the Science Station you made and it’ll give you half the resources you spent back. This is good if you want to move bases.
Exploration
In the early days of a game, you’ll need to run around to map the area for any points of interest and to know where the resources are.
- Harvesting Honey
If you spot a gigantic bee hive like the one shown above you can hammer it for some honey. Just stop hammering it if there’s no honey spilling from the top of it unless you want really angry bees.
You can even find touchstones that can be used for a one-time revival.
The Pig heads next to it can be destroyed by a hammer to get some pig skin.
Sometimes you’ll find some sinkholes when mining around, get a feel of what the underground is like by jumping in. Don’t worry you can climb back up!
The underground is great for finding light bulbs.
These sinkholes can also spawn bats which you can fight with your spear. Once they’re down they can drop their wings which you can use the heal.
Congratulations you now know the basics of Don’t Starve Together. There’s still a lot to learn in the game but these are the basics to help you get started.
