The Roots update for PEAK finally adds the much awaited second biome to the game. The new location comes with a shrouded redwood forest infested by mushrooms and creepy-crawlies. With that, comes new dangers – and also new badges and cosmetics that you can unlock. In this guide, we’ll show you how to unlock all the badges and which of the cosmetics you’ll be able to get with them. Without further delay, let’s get into it!
All New Badges & Cosmetics
There are a total of 11 badges that you can unlock in the PEAK Roots update. Each of them has an objective that gives you a cosmetic as a reward.
Forestry Badge
This is a fairly simple badge as all you need to do is reach the Roots biome. This is one of the two possible second biomes in the game after the Shore. Just light the campfire when you reach there and you’ll get the badge.
Doing so will allow you to unlock the Gnome Hat and Gnome Outfit.
Tread Lightly Badge
For this badge, you will need to climb past the Roots without ever having more than 25% spores. To help with this, there are a number of strategies you can use:
- Use medkits and medicinal roots to remove a decent amount of Spores
- The Yellow Shroomberry produces a random good effect – which can remove Spores too
- Mythical items like Pandora’s Lunchbox, Cure-All and Faerie Lantern can all help
- The Book of Bones turns you into a skeleton making you immune to Spores.
Obtaining this badge will give you the best skin added with this update. This is the Plague Doctor Outfit and Hat.
Web Security Badge
This badge requires you to escape a spider’s web and survive. All you need to do is get near a spider that typically hangs at the bottom of mushrooms. Once it grabs you, it will cover you in a web. So, all you need to do is spam the spacebar as fast as possible to escape.
There is also an alternate way to do this. If you drink Fortified Milk and let the spider grab you, it will be unable to do this. So, you will automatically escape and get the badge because you’re fortified.
This badge will give you the Mummy Outfit and Hat.
Undead Encounter Badge
Next, you’ll need to survive a zombie bite to get the badge. An easy way to do this is to simply approach a zombie and let them grab you. After you’re bit, simply use a medkit or medicinal root and you’ll be able to get the badge.
You just need to use an item that cures you – so you can probably use Cure-All as well.
This badge will give you the Pumpkin Hat cosmetic.
Advanced Mycology Badge
This badge is fairly straightforward. All you need to do is eat the five different mushroom variants added to the Roots biome in a single expedition.
Interestingly, if you feed another player it will count as you eating the mushroom. Simply explore the Roots and try to find all types of mushrooms. Once you eat the fifth one, you will get the badge.
This badge will give you the Antlers cosmetic.
Disaster Response Badge
For this badge, you need to pull an unconscious friend 30m with the Rescue Claw. Starting off, you will need to find the Rescue Claw item. After that, wait for your friend to go unconscious.
Once that happens, go as far away as you can from your friend. After that, simply use the item on them and you should be able to get the badge.
An easy way to do this is to simply keep resetting at the Shore until the Rescue Claw spawns. Next, get your friend to go into the fire of the plane wing. After that, just go as far as you can from your friend and pull them.
Doing so will give you access to the Climbing Helmet and Outfit.
Calcium Intake Badge
Next, you will need to block 100 total damage with the Fortified Milk item.
For this badge, simply drink the Fortified Milk when you get it and jump down from the top of a hill. This should lead to enough damage and you’ll get the badge immediately.
The badge will give you the Third Eye cosmetic. The cool thing about this is that when you change your eyes, it also changes the third eye.
Competitive Eating Badge
This badge requires you to eat x3 Hot Dogs in 5 seconds or less. You have a chance to find hotdogs now instead of marshmallows. So, just collect three of them and then eat them to get the badge.
Doing so will give you access to the Drink Hat.
Applied Esoterica Badge
Next, you’ll need to resurrect a friend using unholy means. To do this, you need to find the new Mystical item, The Book of Bones. It can be found in Ancient Statues or Ancient Luggage.
After that, you need to use it on a friend when they are dead to turn them into a skeleton. Once that’s done, you can use the book to revive them as a skeleton as well. This will give you the badge.
You will also get the Skeleton Onesie cosmetic for this.
Mycoacrobatics Badge
For this badge, you will need to bounce up 40m off a mushroom. A good strategy is to jump onto the mushroom and ragdoll right before you bounce. Doing so will send you flying off and allow you to get the badge.
We do recommend having something like a Cure-All to revive you after because you will likely die. Fortified Milk will also help by negating the fall damage.
You will get the Fairy Hat and Outfit as your reward.
Cryptogastronomy Badge
For the final badge, you will need to cook and eat a Mandrake. The Mandrake is an item that will replace the medicinal roots that you can find in the Roots biome. When you grab it, it starts screaming and makes you drowsy.
So, you will either need to use Fortified Milk before to handle the screaming. The other option is to just cook it quickly and eat it for the badge.
Doing so will give you the Sprout Hat as your cosmetic reward.
