So you’ve sprinted through vents, ducked under animatronics, and gotten your soul jump-scared about ten times, and now you’re standing in front of a keypad in Edwin’s creepy house, wondering what kind of sadistic code you need to enter. Welcome to Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, where even the endings come with puzzles that demand homework-level memory.
The final room in the game is locked behind a randomized code, which, unlike most other puzzles, is different for every playthrough. But don’t panic! The answer is in the game. You just have to dig through six VHS tapes scattered around the map and pay attention to the colors and numbers shown at the end of each video. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to unlock the door.
All Video Tapes Puzzle
Unlike the other keypads in the game, the one in Edwin’s house doesn’t have a static code. Instead, it relies on a hidden system using six VHS tapes you find throughout your run. Each colored tape, when played, reveals a number near the end. Memorizing (or writing down) the color-number pairs is crucial because the order you enter them matters.
Once you’ve collected all six, you’ll piece the code together using the name “DAVID”, with each having a certain color, a nod to Edwin’s son, which is actually scribbled on a sticky note beside the projector and above the final keypad door. That’s your clue.
I’ve also included clips to help you locate each tape and projector, so you’re not wandering around aimlessly like I did.

Green Tape Location
Location: Maintenance Room near the Projector Room
You’ll find this one tucked behind a long table with some creepy Head costumes just chilling on top of it.
Magenta Tape Location
Location: Same floor as Green. Head down the hallway where the Animatronic does its little surprise entrance.
Look for a vent you can crawl into, inside the room at the end is your prize. Just keep your ears peeled while crawling. You know why.
Blue Tape Location
Location: Also on the same floor. Check the office room filled with mannequins.
Red Tape Location
Location: 2nd Floor – go up the stairs from the main hallway. You’ll find this one in the room with the piano.
Yellow Tape Location
Location: 2nd Floor – directly across from the keypad door. It’s literally just there, in the room straight ahead.
How to Solve the Final Puzzle (DAVID Order)
Once you’ve collected all six colored tapes and watched them closely, you’ll notice that each one ends with a number. The order you enter those numbers into the final keypad isn’t random, it’s actually based on David’s name, which shows up in two places: on a sticky note by the projector and again above the keypad door in Edwin’s house.
But here’s the thing: that DAVID label isn’t just a name, it’s color-coded. The picture/sticky note shows you exactly what color corresponds to each letter in “DAVID,” which you then use to match the numbers from the reels.

For example, in one of my runs, the sticky note showed:
- D = Green
- A = Magenta
- V = Blue
- I = Red
- D = Yellow (yes, the second D had a different color!)
So I used the numbers from the VHS tapes that matched those colors and entered them in that DAVID order. That unlocked the final room.
Important: This exact color order might be different for you! The tape colors seem to be randomized per playthrough, so always double-check the sticky note in your own game to match your DAVID color sequence correctly.

Wrap-Up
And that’s how to solve the video tape puzzle and unlock the secret ending in FNAF: Secret of the Mimic. It’s one of the few puzzles in the game that truly makes you think, like, pen-and-paper level think. Hopefully this spared you the trial-and-error (and constant rewatching of tapes) I went through.
Next up, if you’re hunting down every door code combination in FNAF: Secret of the Mimic, I made a full guide just for that, every hidden keypad, code, and where to find ‘em. No more aimless running in circles (I did enough of that for both of us).
