Cities Skylines 2 has finally been released and is a dream come true for avid fans of the series. The latest installment in the series features stunning visuals with groundbreaking mechanics that make it a great game overall.
Zoning is an important part of the game that allows you to properly allocate space for different buildings in the game. Due to the complexity of this mechanic, many players tend to forget some important uses. This guide will essentially be a recap of the in-game zoning tutorial to help refresh your memory.
Zoning In-Game Tutorial
In case you skipped the tutorial, this guide will be divided into different sections that will cover all of the important zoning aspects when it comes to Zoning.
Overview
As mentioned previously, zoning essentially allows you to build buildings of a specific type in the allocated region. Buildings in the zoned area are constructed automatically to cater to the city’s needs.
Zone Types
There are multiple types of zones depending on the type of building that can be constructed in the region. For instance, you can allocate regions for housing or for commercial or industrial buildings.
Zone Themes
This builds upon the Zone Types as mentioned previously. Essentially, this allows you to modify the overall theme of the building that will be built in a particular zone.
For instance, you can construct European Style Houses in a residential zone if you wish to do so.
Tool Modes
Next up, we have the Tool Modes, which allow you to shape zones exactly the way you want to. As seen in the images, potential zone areas are essentially a grid of squares.
Using this feature, you can select different square orientations that you like.
It is, however, important to note that for buildings to be constructed, the selected region must have enough space and should be adjacent to a road.
Low-Density Housing
This is basically a specialized form of residential housing that is catered for single-family homes.
Such types of housing have a positive impact on the overall happiness of the residents, so they are good for a morale boost.
The downside is that these can become expensive to live in as the land value grows. It is important to cater to the housing needs of your residents depending on the overall economy of your city.
Zoning for Residential
Residential Zoning is very important for the overall working of your city since it allows residents to move in.
It is essential to map out your residential areas since people prefer areas that are far from pollution sources.
Make sure that Residential areas are connected through roads to the entire city and beyond because you don’t want to trap your residents in one area.
Removing Zones & Rezoning
It is possible that you made a zone in the incorrect place and now want to remove it. This can be done easily using the Remove Zone feature.
For this, simply hold down the Right Mouse Button and select the area that you wish to remove.
It is also possible to Rezone, meaning that you can change one zone type to another. An important point to note with Rezoning and Removing Zones is that buildings in those regions will become Condemned.
What this means is that they will they demolished over time unless you bulldoze them manually.
Commerical Zones
Up next, Commercial Zones are very important since these allow you to provide space for various businesses.
These businesses are the ones that provide income to the city through the payment of taxes. Additionally, they also provide jobs and services to residents that keep them happy and employed.
Low-Density Businesses
Similar to the residential zones, these are also Low-Density Businesses that refer to single-story or low-rise buildings. These include local services such as stores and gas stations for residents.
Commercial Zoning is very important since it allows businesses to grow and expand. This, in turn, generates more revenue for your city and provides employment to residents.
You should try to place residential zones in close proximity to commercial zones to raise happiness.
Lastly, make sure that commercial zones are close to larger roads since this will allow for faster deliveries of goods.
Industrial Zones
These are another type of zone that allows for industrial businesses to expand and provides jobs to employees as well.
Industrial Manufacturing
A specialized type of zone is the Industrial Manufacturing zone, which basically includes storage and manufacturing buildings and warehouses.
Such zones will contain buildings that allow your Industrial Businesses to create goods that can be used by the local industry.
Since Industrial Businesses are dependent on raw materials, it is best if you place them near roads. This will allow them to have a constant supply of materials in the form of deliveries.
Lastly, these zones are the main contributors to Pollution, which has an adverse effect on residential areas.
Hence, it is best to build these zones away from Residential Areas and Groundwater sources since they can pollute those as well.
