If you are a new player or a returning one, you’ll be excited to learn that magic has been added to Core Keeper.
In this guide, we’ll talk about the best build for warlocks especially if you’re in the early game. At this point, players have low skill, and low hit points, and boss fights are usually a challenge. So this Warlock guide is heavily beginner-friendly. Let’s get started!
Best Beginner Warlock Guide
Here’s what we’ll cover in this complete beginner’s guide:
- Equipment
- Pets
- Skills
- Consumables
Feel free to browse the Table of Contents if you’re only looking for a certain part of the warlock build.
Equipment
Here is all the equipment you’ll need for this beginner-friendly Warlock build. This Warlock build focuses on summoning bats and keeping them up as long as possible.
Items
We’ll cover all the best items to have in your build as a beginner Warlock along with how to acquire those items in the game.
- Witch Doctor Hat
+3 Max Health
+3 Armor
+1 Max Minion Count
You can get this off of Shrooman from the Dirt Biome.
- Chiefton Tunic and Chiefton Shorts
Tunic: +17 Max Health
+9 Magic Barrier
+1 Max Minion Count
Shorts: +17 Max Health
+8 Magic Barrier
+13.2% Minion Attack Speed
Both of these items can be found by either killing mobs in the Clay Cavern or by defeating Ghorm. Wearing the tunic gives a minion but by wearing the set you get two additional minions.
- Skull Necklace/Polished Gold Crystal Necklace.
The next best item is the Skull Necklace.
-26 Max Health
+37.5% Minion Damage
However, this item only drops off of Malugaz, and if you can’t acquire this item yet, you can go for the Polished Gold Crystal Necklace
+19% Magic Damage
+20.1% Magic Damage
This item is something that you can easily craft.
- Hourglass Ring
+31% Minion Lifespan
You’ll find these items as drops by Cavelings in the forgotten ruins.
- Blue Leather Tome/Rift Lens
+9.6 Magic Damage
+1.2 Mana every second
This one is another great offhand item to have with you. The downside is that you need to defeat Malugaz in order to craft it at his statue, so it shares the same issue with the Skull Necklace.
Alternatively, if you haven’t reached the point of defeating Malugaz, you can equip the Rift Lens.
+8% Magic Damage
This item drops off of Glurch and Ghorm.
Weapons
- Tome of the Dark
In terms of weapons, you will be limited to using The Tome of Dark in the early game. This weapon summons bats.
The next best weapon after this one is The Tome of the Dead but it also doesn’t drop until the mold dungeon which is beyond the Great Wall. Which means players will have to stick with summoning bats for now.
- Arcane Staff
Warlocks benefit from using secondary attacks since your minions will attack on their own, independently. Therefore, Accane Staff is a good option because it uses low Mana.
- Iron Bow
As a secondary, the Iron Bow is also an excellent alternative due to its speed and low Mnaa cost. This allows you to use the majority of your mana on resummoning Bats.
Lantern Slot
For the lantern slot, you can try using the Pumpkin Lantern for health. You can only get the Pumpkin Lantern, however, through the Halloween event.
To get it, you can activate the seasonal event and get the lantern or you can use other lanterns that you’ll find suitable, the choice is yours on this one.
Item Bag
For an item bag, a good option is the Ghorm’s Stomach Bag because this item has the most inventory slots you’ll find in a bag so far and it gives a nice little health boost which can be useful to beginners in the early game.
+12 Inventory Slots
+30 Max Health
However, it’s important to note that any bag will work if you can get your hands on this specific one because bags are not essentially part of your builds in the game.
Pets
Having any pets at this stage of the game will be a good addition. However, we recommend that you avoid using Ember Tail during the Malugaz fight because the boss is immune to burn damage.
Owl Lux
+7.6% Movement speed
+6.5% Damage
+6% Chance on a hit to deal triple the amount of Damage
You can find an Owl Lux early on in the game in one of the crates found in the Dirt Biome.
Other options include the Dog, which would be an excellent addition, or an Orange Slime. You can’t go wrong with any of the early-game pets because all of them provide some sort of helpful buff.
Skills
Fights in the early game are much more easygoing on players and they do not depend much skill bonuses as much as they would later on in the game.
However, it is important to get the primary combat skills up and running until the 30s or 40s before you proceed to have the battle with Malugaz.
Additionally, the higher the vitality, the better it is for you at a chance for an easy victory.
Crafting
You’ll want to get to 100 crafting as quickly as you can so we recommend building a wood farm and building wooden items. This may include torches, bridges, or anything along the lines.
It takes about 15,000 wood to reach 100 crafting with the bridges. This may seem a lot but it absolutely is achievable if you get a good farm. You should reach this milestone in about 12-15 hours.
For the rest of the skill points, there are no restrictions on how you’d like to spend them and you can take the charge here. The early game does not offer many options when it comes to skills points. The game is also forgiving in terms of it (just at the beginning).
No combat skill is a bad choice within the first two tiers so you can’t go wrong. If you’d like a nudge in a certain direction, you can focus on skills that increase your damage and attack speed first.
Focusing on skills best for your build should work flawlessly.
Consumables
We have a few options that should be a part of your roster in terms of food and drinks. These could be of great use to you during boss battles or simply while traveling.

If you’re still new to how food works in the game, check out the guide to give you a head-start in the right direction.

This item is craftable at the Alchemy table, as well.
- Meadow Milk
+23.5 armor for 1 min
If you have a Mullen farm, you can get the Meadow Milk which also provides an armor bonus but it does not stack with Stoneskin potion.
- Hot punch
+7.6% melee and ranged attack speed for 30 sec
This does not apply to your minions but it will be of excellent use to you.
And there it is! We’ve covered everything you need to know to make the best beginner-friendly warlock build that will give you a head-start as a beginner warlock in the game. As mentioned in the guide, you can also use this build to defeat Malugaz, if you haven’t already!
