Demon Hunter is a game that takes what makes many Roblox games fun and blends it with the iconic Demon Slayer anime. You can even choose to be a Demon or a Slayer – with so many routes available for each race. As a result, many new players will find the game a bit daunting when they are first playing it.

If you’re just starting out as a Slayer, you’re in luck. We’ve got you covered with a complete beginner’s guide that will show you how to start strong. Additionally, you will also get an idea of the initial progression to becoming a true Slayer. With that said, let’s go and slay some demons!

Beginner Slayer Guide & Progression

Demon Hunter has a lot of depth in its various systems and gameplay. So, we will only be talking about whatever is relevant for beginning Slayers in this guide.

Here is everything you’ll need to worry about as a beginner Slayer:

  • Understand Breathing Styles and the Skill Tree
  • Complete Final Selection
  • Navigate the Swordsmith Village
  • Undergo extensive Breathing Training
  • Go on Missions (ideally Freeroam Missions).

SIDE NOTE: I’ll be mentioning a lot of locations from the game. If you’re not familiar with them, make sure to check out our dedicated guide for all the locations in Demon Hunter!

Breathing Styles and Skill Tree

When you spawn into the game for the first time, you’ll start off as a Mizunoto. This is the lowest ranking you can have as a Slayer, and you’ll only have a wooden sword. The picture below shows the rankings list, from highest to lowest.

It is taken from the Demon Hunter Official Trello, which has all sorts of sections that we highly recommend you check out as a beginner.

Once you spawn, you’ll need to pick a Breathing Style. Here is a breakdown of the Breathing Styles in the game:

  • Limb Cutting Breathing (eg. Insect Breathing)
    • Does more damage to the Red (Blood) Bar
    • Does less damage to the Green (Health) Bar
  • Burst Breathing (eg. Flame Breathing)
    • Does more damage to Green (Health) Bar
    • Does less damage to the Red (Blood) Bar
  • Hybrid Breathing
    • Does a decent amount of damage to both Green and Red Bar
    • NOT RECOMMENDED for beginners who do not have an idea of builds yet.

In essence, you can pick any Breathing Style at the start, as long as it isn’t Hybrid Breathing. As the game progresses, you’ll be able to work around it. Alternatively, you can pick a Breathing Style that seems particularly interesting to you.

For example, certain Breathing Styles get unique Nichirin Weapons, mentioned later in this guide.

After that, press the M key, and it’ll open your Skill Tree. On the right, you’ll see a bunch of Nodes. You can use these Nodes to upgrade your Skills and Stats.

On the left, you’ll see an icon that says Breathing. Once you’ve picked your Breathing Style, you’ll be able to see all your skills listed here.

You can get more Nodes and Skills by either killing Demons or completing Missions. Don’t worry, we’ll be diving into these a bit later in the Missions section. The killing hasn’t even begun yet!

Completing Your Final Selection (Become an Official Slayer!)

We highly recommend that you get your Final Selection done as soon as possible. It is your first step to becoming a Slayer and is kind of unavoidable when it comes to progressing through the game.

The area for the Final Selection is hidden in the Mountains. When you’re in the Mountains, you’ll be able to recognize it by the shimmering green border in front of it. Keep in mind that Final Selection begins at every XX:08, so enter the area before that time!

We recommend checking out our How To Get To Final Selection guide, as it’ll show you step by step how to get there.

Once you’re in the Final Selection Lobby, you’ll be given certain requirements that you need to fulfill to pass the test. Here are the basic ones, that need to be completed simultaneously:

  • Participate in 15 Demon Kills
    • Only 2 HITS needed for credit
  • Survive for at least 51 minutes straight without dying.

Keep in mind that around the 30-40 minute mark, the Hand Boss Demon will spawn in. He is incredibly overpowered and can only kill you in 2 shots since you’re a beginner, unless you’ve trained for it. So, we highly recommend that you just stay away from him.

Do not even go near him as dealing with him is not a requirement. So just hide up in the mountains or a similar spot until the Final Selection is over. Once you pass the test, congratulations, you are now a Slayer! You’ll be teleported to the snowy Swordsmith Village for the next stage.

Arriving at the Snowy Swordsmith Village (To Get Your First Weapon!)

Now that you’re officially a Slayer, you’re ready to get your Nichirin Weapon. You’ll be able to get it from the Sswordsmith there. Every single Breathing Style Slayer will get a Nichrin Katana, besides 6 Breathing Styles.

Here are the Breathing Styles which all get their own unique Weapon:

  • Sound Breathing
  • Insect Breathing
  • Beast Breathing
  • Snake Breathing
  • Stone Breathing
  • Love Breathing.

Once you have your Nichirin, you can get to progressing your demon. Before you do that, however, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the Swordsmith. You’ll be visiting him quite a bit, and the various services he provides will be essential to your Slayer progression.

In essence, the Swordsmith provides you with reforging, buffing and repair services. When choosing any of these services, you’ll need to give him ingredients.

You get ingredients by completing missions and killing Demons. In fact, you should already have some after Final Selection.

All of the ingredients vary in Tiers: Ungraded Grade being the lowest Tier while High Grade being the highest. When you choose a service from the Swordsmith, it will open up a GUI. In this GUI, you can put in the ingredients that you have.

High Grade ingredients will ensure a high chance of success with the service (practically guaranteed) while lower grade ingredients will have a low chance. So, in essence, it is up to you to decide how much you want the succession rate to be, depending on your priorities.

Breathing Training

Demon Slayer fans will know just how important Breathing Training is for any Slayer. This importance is also reflected in the game. You will absolutely have to prioritize Breathing Training in the game. It will make you a stronger Slayer, which means you’ll get better at fighting Demons.

Not only that, but the PvP will also become much more fun. This is courtesy of the additional buffs and passives you get as you level up your Breathing Level.

Starting off, you want to start spamming the 5k Breathing Trainings. Once you’ve mastered them, you can move onto the 10k ones, and so on. These training sessions will help improve your breathing capacity and speed, as you continue to level up.

When you initiate a Breathing Training, it will start a mini game. The mini game is pretty simple. All you need to do is click on the numbers when the big circle is in line with the smaller circle. The more accurate you are, the more breathing EXP you’ll get.

If you’re familiar with OSU, the mini game works exactly like that.

You’ll know you’re gaining Breathing EXP when you see the following message appear after a successful Training session. Whatever happens, do not compromise on your Breathing Training as a Slayer!

Completing Missions (Killing Demons)

Now we’re at the part that you’ve been looking forward to the most as a Slayer – killing Demons. You can kill Demons by completing Missions. Press the V key to access the Missions Queue, where you can choose which type you want to go for.

As you can see, there are two types of Missions: Freeroam and Travel

 Mission Queue in Demon Hunter.

In Freeroam Missions, you have a bird fly up to you. It will tell you that a demon has spawned somewhere in the map and indicate the location. Killing the Demon will net you 2-3k Yen, alongside some other small rewards.

We highly recommend that you focus on these if you are a beginner Slayer.

On the other hand, we have Travel Missions. For the most part, you want to avoid these missions until you are past the Beginner Stage. They are incredibly difficult, because there is a chance for a random Player Demon to tail you.

In the early stages, Demons are much stronger than Slayers. So, you will likely lose the fight, and can even have an NPC Demon attack you at the same time. As you progress through the game and get more skills, you’ll be better equipped for these Travel Missions.

That’s everything you need to know about the Beginner Slayer Progression Guide. Quite a lot of exciting content here, especially for fans of the anime. There’s still a ton of content in the game, but we leave that to you to discover as you progress through the game. Good luck with slaying any Demons that dare face you!
