Okay, real talk, I hate this boss. Caligo, Miasma of Night is the first boss in Elden Ring: Nightreign that made me want to throw my controller, uninstall the game, reinstall it out of spite, then cry in the shower. I thought I had the mechanics down, I really did… but this icy sky-lord still finds a way to turn me into a popsicle every time. Caligo is the boss of Day 3’s “Fissure in the Fog” expedition, and he is not messing around. This towering frost dragon mixes up close-range smashes, ice breath, giant AoEs, and just enough gimmicks to make your blood boil (which is ironic, because he really wants to freeze it). But hey, with the right prep, a good fire weapon, and the ability to run like your life depends on it (it does), you can bring him down. Let me walk you through it.
Caligo, Miasma of Night Boss Weaknesses
Caligo is one of the six Nightlord bosses that become available after defeating Tricephalos. You’ll find him in the Fissure in the Fog, and yes, the name fits. You’ll want to complete this expedition because it rewards a Trace of Night, and you’ll need four of those to unlock the final boss of Nightreign.
He’s massive, menacing, and has more frost mechanics than an entire Skyrim DLC. The first time you fight him, you’ll probably get obliterated. The fifth time? Same. But eventually, you’ll get into a rhythm, and that’s where this guide comes in.
Grab your frost resist gear and your best flame weapon, it’s time to roast this dragon.

How to Prepare for Caligo, Miasma of Night Boss
If you’ve unlocked the Shifting Earth: Mountaintop world event, do it before fighting Caligo. Completing it gives you a permanent Frost resistance boost and increased damage against dragons. It makes a huge difference, basically like playing the boss on easy mode without sacrificing loot.
For solo players, Executor is a strong choice thanks to his high Arcane and Bleed stacking. But if you’re down for a longer fight, Raider or Wylder both work great for their bulk and damage.
In co-op, Recluse dishes out big damage, and Ironeye is your tanky lifeline with that sweet Marking ability.
Look out for relics or perks that say “raises resistance to all ailments.” These stack with frost resist and make a big difference during the fight.
No matter your setup, bring something with Fire damage. Flame spells, fire swords, fire whips, anything that lights up will absolutely cook this boss. And if you can stack Fire and Bleed (hello, Eleonora’s Poleblade), you’re golden.
I went in with melee, and that’s what I recommend here. One ranged player on the team is fine, but this boss rewards up-close aggression.

How to Beat Caligo (Without Losing Your Mind)
Phase One: The Core Strategy — Flank, Flee, Repeat
Let me give it to you straight: this fight is all about movement and patience. If you overextend or get greedy, you’ll get clipped, hard. Here’s the basic rhythm:
- Wait for him to land after a flight phase.
- Sprint under or behind him and get a few quick hits in.
- Back off when he starts an animation, frost breath, wing glow, tail wind-up.
- Run like hell when he flies off.
- Repeat.
If you keep your stamina in check and don’t overcommit, you’ll make steady progress. Frostbite will build up over time, especially when standing in front of the boss. If that meter fills, you’ll take massive damage and lose damage output. That’s why frost resistance is a must.
Stay mobile, and avoid the frost cloud zones. Even with resistance, the buildup can get dangerous if you’re not paying attention.
Positioning & Weak Spots
Best strategy? Get underneath him or behind his back legs.
- The face is a crit spot, but hard to stay on without taking a beating.
- The tail can hit you, so behind isn’t always safe, but it’s better than standing in front where the frost sprays constantly.
When he’s not aggroed to you, circle under and behind him. Many of his attacks can’t reach you there. I also recommend that 1 player targets the face, while two players target its legs.
Air Phase & Sky Freeze Attack
At some point, the map gets foggy, then he’ll fly up and freeze the sky, darkening the map. When this starts:
- You can try to interrupt it early by finding and hitting him fast
- OR wait it out, and then dodge roll right before the shards crash down
That sky attack can chunk your team for 30% health, but it’s avoidable with good timing.
Fire Is King
Any fire weapon will stagger Caligo with repeated hits, and it applies a debuff that lowers his attack and defense. A teammate of mine had the Red Giant Beard Whip, and it was melting his frost resistance like ice cream in July.
Avoid the Inhale — It’s a Trap
If you see Caligo pause and start sucking in air? BACK. OFF. That’s his frost breath attack, and it’s deadly. Most of our wipes came from someone eating that to the face. It’s bait, don’t fall for it.
Watch the Wings and Tail
Here’s what to keep an eye on:
- Wing Glow = Wing Beat incoming, dodge to the side or toward him.
- Tail Curl = Double tail slam. Either block, dodge into it, or get out fast.
- Crystal Flyby = Sprint or roll under to avoid ice shards.
When the crystals rain down, you can either roll through them or back out completely. I like to dodge through for counterattack setups, but that’s a personal masochistic preference.
Phase Two: Everything Gets Worse
At 50% HP, Caligo kicks things up a notch:
- Freezing Sky Disc – Sprint out from the center, or into it if you’re brave.
- Ice Beam of Death – Hide behind spawned ice crystals or get nuked.
- Spinning Ice Breath – Back away and reposition. If you’re under him where he lands, you’re relatively safe.
- Ultimate Attack – Two aerial swoops with ice shards, then a projectile barrage. Look for gaps in the shards, there’s always a safe spot.
Tip: Don’t try to revive teammates unless Caligo is across the map or down to the last sliver of health. We tried. We failed. We learned.
Roles and Coordination + Tips
If someone is drawing aggro (Ironeye or anyone tanky), your job is to pour in damage while the boss is distracted. Spellcasters, get those flame spells cooking. Melee, aim for the legs or tail.
A good group will rotate between attack and evasion without anyone trying to be a hero. Let the boss dance around, you just need to outlast the blizzard.
- Try to stick close together under the boss
- Avoid ranged spam distance, he’ll punish it with AoEs and leaps
- If can be a good strategy that when someone goes down, revive quickly, each knockdown increases revive time:
- 1st: 1 bar
- 2nd: 2 bars
- 3rd: 3 bars (about 20 seconds!)
- Save your ultimates to revive teammates if needed. And if you’re the healer or support, you’ll want to manage spacing and cooldowns smartly.
The Rewards: What You Get for Your Trouble
After bringing down Caligo, you’ll receive:
- Trace of Night (one of four needed to face the final boss)
- Night of the Miasma Boss Relic
- A handful of Murk
- Some randomized relics, because hey, it wouldn’t be Elden Ring without RNG loot.

Wrap-Up: This Boss Sucks (But You’ve Got This)
Caligo, Miasma of Night is frustrating, punishing, and beautiful in the worst way. He’s got mechanics that force you to stay mobile, punish greedy play, and reward coordination. I died to him a lot. But I also learned to respect the fight, and fire damage. Stick to the rhythm. Dodge the big attacks. Stay mobile. Bring fire. You’ll get through it, even if you hate every second like I did.
Again, I hate this boss. Caligo’s the kind of dragon that shows up, fogs up the arena, ice-blasts you from across the map, then flies off before you can even land a hit. So many Nightreign bosses have this airborne diva syndrome. At least Sentient Pest sticks around and throws down like it means it, seriously, if you haven’t fought it yet, check out my complete Sentient Pest guide & how to beat it. That boss actually wants to brawl, not play hide-and-frostbite.
