In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, building powerful character loadouts often hinges on a key resource: Colour of Lumina. These items grant Lumina points, which allow characters to equip powerful passive abilities that can significantly enhance performance in battle. As you approach the game’s most challenging encounters, having enough Lumina points to slot critical abilities becomes important. Unfortunately, Colour of Lumina is scarce and difficult to come by, especially if you’re hoping to farm it efficiently. In this guide, we’ll break down how to get Colour of Lumina and reveal the best-known method to obtain it reliably!

How to Get Colour of Lumina

Side quests in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

There are a few ways to obtain Colour of Lumina during the course of your expedition, but most are limited. You can find them by:

  • Organically exploring different regions (which are often hidden in corners of the map or tucked behind environmental puzzles)
  • Rewards from some side quests, like saving White Nevrons, and returning journals to Gestral Village.
  • Buying from a few merchants that sell them in limited quantities.

That said, none of these sources are renewable. Once you’ve collected what’s available in the world and completed the key side quests, you’ll quickly find yourself running out. This item cannot be farmed through ordinary means, at least not until you unlock a very specific method.

Unlocking the Farm: Prerequisites

To access the only known farming method for Colour of Lumina, you’ll first need to unlock Underwater Diving. This requires building your relationship with Esquie  (one of your companions). Speak to Esquie at camp repeatedly to increase your bond until you reach relationship level 6.

Upon completing it, you’ll gain the ability to explore underwater areas. This is an essential step for accessing the dungeon where Colour of Lumina farming is possible.

You’ll also need to prepare Maelle as your main character for this strategy. Specifically, you’ll need her to wield a unique weapon called Medalum. To obtain it, you must defeat Golgra in Gestral Village.

Visit the village, speak with Golgra, and you should be able to trigger the fight. (Be warned: it’s a tough encounter.)

Lastly, it’s strongly recommended that you attempt this farming route at level 90, as the enemies you’ll face are some of the most difficult in the game, and the dungeon boss is among the hardest encounters.

Farming Location: Renoir’s Drafts

The location you’re looking for is Renoir’s Drafts, an underwater dungeon located south of the Monolith and slightly southeast of the Siren. Once you’ve unlocked underwater traversal, this area becomes accessible.

Inside this location, your main target is a merchant miniboss called Grour, who appears deep within the dungeon. He is accompanied by two additional enemies.

What makes this encounter unique is that it is repeatable. You can fight the merchant as many times as you like, and each victory will reward you with 1 to 2 Colour of Lumina. This makes it the only reliable farming method currently known to players.

Combat Strategy and Build Guide

To farm the merchant efficiently, use Maelle with her Medalum weapon upgraded to at least level 33. This weapon makes you start in Virtuose Stance immediately and provides an essential boost to your damage (200%).

The farming strategy revolves around quickly wiping out the two supporting enemies and then eliminating the merchant himself right after.

Best skills for Colour of Lumina farming in Expedition 33 - Best Colour of Lumina Farming Locations & Tips

Your main skills should be:

  • Phantom Strike, a powerful area-of-effect attack that can dispatch the two adds.
  • For targeting the merchant specifically, use Stendhal, a strong single-target spell.
  • Additionally, Last Chance will be part of your opening combo (it reduces your HP to 1, which is key to triggering the massive damage bonus from At Death’s Door, a Lumina that grants 50% increased damage when at critical health)

Some of the most important Lumina and passives to equip include:

  • Painted Power
  • At Death’s Door
  • Solo Fighter
  • Last Stand Critical
  • Augmented First Strike
  • First Offensive
  • Confident Fighter
  • Glass Cannon
  • Immaculate
  • Inverted Affinity (synergizes well with tainted status effects)
  • Powerful Shield and Shield Affinity (assuming you won’t take damage)
  • In Medias Res (for safety)

Because Lumina points are limited, you’ll want to equip expensive passives like Cheater and Energising Turn as Pictos instead. You’ll also need action point generation tools—Energy Master and Energizing Turn are good options here.

The basic flow of battle is to open with Phantom Strikes to clear the mobs around him first. The merchant will act next, at which point you finish him off using Stendhal or more Phantom Strikes.

Additional Tips

  • If you don’t have any of the mentioned requirements, you can use whatever skills, Lumina, and Pictos you have on hand to replicate or improve the build. This is simply a guideline that you can copy or adapt to suit your preferred playstyle. The key is to burst down the enemies quickly, avoid taking damage, and maximize your damage output through synergistic passives.

This farming method provides both XP and Colour of Lumina, making it an efficient late-game route for players looking to max out their builds in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While other strategies exist, this method stands out for being the most reliable and accessible. Once you’ve unlocked everything you need, farming the merchant becomes a very repeatable and manageable task that will help your growth into the toughest encounters later down the line.
