Control Scheme

Starting with the control scheme, this will give you some options to adjust and select all the buttons you want for your controls. Also, enabling some options that can make your driving feel more smooth and more controllable during the race.

  1. First, go to the generic settings in the options and turn the Overtake ERS Mode on toggle instead of hold mode. This enables the player to only press the overtake mode once instead of holding the button again and again. F1 23: Controller Settings Guide
  2. The second is adjusting the sensitivity of the Adaptive triggers. This can help you manage the gradual input of acceleration and braking when pressing the buttons. I suggest putting it on medium to balance it out. F1 23: Controller Settings Guide
  3. Now it’s time for the control mapping. I suggest that you keep most of the buttons in default. However, we will add a few shortcuts that can be helpful during the race. Unbind the Look Forward, Back, Left, and Right buttons. Shown in the picture below. F1 23: Controller Settings Guide
  4. Now, bind a button you’re comfortable with in the look-back setting. You can use any button you want, as long as you’re comfortable during the race. F1 23: Controller Settings Guide
  5. Next are the button settings for the Differential and Brake bias. For the brake bias, use the Left and Right buttons. For the differentials, use the Up and Down buttons. Doing so will help you change your brake bias and differential with ease, without the need of opening the settings repeatedly. F1 23: Controller Settings Guide

Calibrations

In this section of the article, I will provide the best calibration for the controller to give you maximum performance during the race. This was only possible thanks to the new Precision Drive Technology added to the game.

NOTE: If you don’t want to adjust any calibration settings in your game controls, you can skip this section of the article.

  1. First, is the Steering dead zone. Flick your left joy stick to either side and check if the number returns to 0 when using the testing menu as shown in the picture below. If it doesn’t return to 0, adjust the steering dead zone by 1 until it is fixed. F1 23: Controller Settings GuideF1 23: Controller Settings Guide
  2. The second is adjusting the Steering Linearity. This will make your steering more smooth and have less rough movement when turning left or right. I recommend adjusting it to 30.
  3. Next, open up the testing menu again and check if every time you flick the joystick from left to right it shows -100 and 100. If it doesn’t show -100 or 100, adjust the Steering Saturation by adding 1 number until it is fixed. Doing this will not make your car drift to the left or right when making a hard turn. 4. If you want to adjust your Throttle Linearity, you can put it to 20. However, this depends on you and how you want your throttle to be sensitive. This will smoothen the throttle of the car every time you push down the acceleration button. F1 23: Controller Settings Guide
  5. For the Brake Linearity, adjust it to 30 for a smooth braking experience, especially for tight corners.

Vibration and Force Feedback Settings

In this part, we will adjust the vibration of the controller every time you hit a wall or a curve during the race. You can turn this off if you’re annoyed with the vibration of the controller by going to the vibration and force feedback option. However, if you want to improve the vibration of your controller, keep going further.

  1. First, the Vibration & Force Feedback Strenght. The default settings should be 100, but if you want to increase the strength of the vibration, use can adjust it to 120.
  2. Now, if you adjust the Off Track Effects. It will prevent the controller from vibrating every time your car slides off the track and into the grass or sand. You can adjust this to your own preference.
  3. Lastly, the most important adjustment is the Maximum Wheel Rotation (F1&F2). Adjusting this setting to 280 will make your car turn smoothly and much more responsive, especially in tight corners.

There you have it, these are the settings and adjustments you can make for your PS4 and PS5 controller to make your driving experience smoother and better in F1 23. Feel free to tinker with the options until you find your preferred settings and adjustments. No racers are the same, everyone has their own driving style.
