There has been a lot of news lately about GTA 6, even without Rockstar’s approval to release any information whatsoever due to the hacker that leaked a build that was not meant for public eyes. The game was confirmed to be in development back in February 2022, which began exciting fans of the series. While it’s not completely confirmed when it could be released, players speculated that it could be far from now.
That is, until the leaks came along.
This was a pretty big deal in September 2022, as game footage and screenshots of GTA 6 were leaked out into the internet for everyone to see. The footage and stills presented in the early build showcased an incomplete version of the game as it was still being developed. It did, however, showcase some gameplay elements like movement and gunplay.
We did not, however, know what the map looked like, as the footage and screenshots did not showcase any map menu. We did see what looks to be a city where we would be playing in when the game fully releases, but again, no map.
According to Church of GTA on Twitter, they did a line up of the GTA V coordinates with the GTA VI coordinates that was visible in the leaks. According to them, the possibility of Rockstar’s next entry to the Grand Theft Auto series might include a map much bigger than the previous entry, possibly even bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2.
But does having a bigger map mean that it’s better?
We have seen games try to do large maps multiple times across the years. Final Fantasy XV, Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed, Tom Clancy’s: Ghost Recon, Dragon Age, Just Cause, Rage 2 etc. These games have large maps, but majority of them are so barren and empty, it makes you wonder if having a large map is worth it if you don’t have much to do in it.
While Rockstar does not have this problem as their previous games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V featured large maps but had a lot of content waiting, it’s understandable that fans might be worried that the map is too big.
But I believe Rockstar knows what they are doing. Just look at Red Dead Redemption 2, their latest game. Despite the game being 4 years and old and from the last generation, it is considered to be the golden standard of how to do open world games. Rockstar knows what they are doing, they have a pretty good track record so far on their open world games, so I have faith that they can do a large map justice, as they have done in the past.
