One type of puzzle that you can find throughout Hogwarts Legacy’s open world is the so-called Merlin Trials.

These puzzles are available after being introduced to them during the “Trials of Merlin” story quest, and you can find them all across the map.

In this guide, we’ll go over the Merlin Trials that are found within the Forbidden Forest region.

How to Solve the Forbidden Forest Merlin Trials Puzzle

There are 3 different types of Merlin Trials at the Forbidden Forest: Light Torches, Standing Stones, and Moth Gathering.

You can start each trial by approaching its location and using Mallowsweet Leaves on the Merlin Trial platform.

Let’s go over each one of them, detailing their location and solution.

Light Torches

This trial is found in the southern section of the Forbidden Forest, as shown on the map below.

For this trial, you’ll need to find 3 torches spread around the area and light them on fire. Once they’re on fire, they’ll start sinking to the ground. Light them all up before they bore into the earth.

Using the spell Revelio will highlight the torches in blue, making them easier to find. Confringo is recommended for lighting the torches as it can be used from a distance.

The first torch can be found to the southeast of the Merlin Trial platform, behind some massive spider webs. Burn the webs and light the torch.

Now, run back towards the Merlin Trial platform.

The second torch is straight north from the platform. Use Revelio to spot it more easily, as the bushes in the area might block your vision.

The third torch is to the northwest of the platform and it’s easily spotted out in the open. It’s somewhat far, which is why Confringo is particularly useful here.

After you light the torches up, the trial will be completed.

Moth Gathering

This trial is near the center of the Forbidden Forest, most easily reached from the West Forbidden Forest Floo Flame. Again, refer to the map below.

As soon as you activate the Merlin Trial platform, you might notice that some glowing moth swarms appeared. You’ll have to gather these moths and brings them to cube crystals in the area.

The first set of moths can be spotted inside a wooden tower, visible from the Merlin Trial platform.

Approach them and cast Lumos to bring them with you to the crystal by the large tree, northeast of the Merlin Trial platform.

As soon as you leave the first moth swarm at the crystal, turn towards the south to spot the second swarm by a skinning rack.

Approach the skinning rack and cast Confringo or Incendio to burn the overgrowth plant life, freeing the moths. Grab the moths with Lumos and bring them to the crystal to your right.

Now, while standing near the cube crystal, look toward the west. You will spot a rock wall on the side of the cliff.

The last moth swarm is hidden behind these rocks.

Approach the rock wall and cast a forceful spell such as Depulso to knock them down, revealing a small cave where the moths reside. Enter the cave and attract the moths with Lumos.

Bring the moths to the last cube crystal north of the Merlin Trial platform. It’s near a tree by some birdcages. The puzzle will complete as soon as the moths light the cube.

Standing Stones

This trial is on the northeastern edge of the Forbidden Forest, very close to the East Forbidden Forest Floo Flame. Its location is shown on the map below.

For this trial, you’ll rely on execution more than on wits. You’ll need to jump across the large stone pillars, stepping on them all without falling to the ground.

Before you start, use your spells to knock down the rock formations on top of the pillars. The Basic Cast magic bolt works great for this.

When you’ve cleared the rocks off the pillars, jump on the large crate next to one of the pillars. Now all you have to do is to jump from one pillar to the next, but make sure not to fall as it resets the course.

Complete the platforming course and the trial will be completed.
