In a world overrun by bugs, towering soda cans, and mutant wasps, sometimes your biggest struggle in Grounded 2 isn’t survival, it’s finding something as simple as a grass seed. Trust me, I’ve been there. I ran around in circles for way too long before realizing grass seeds aren’t just random drops from slicing grass. Nope, there’s a trick to it, and I’m here to break it down for you.

How to Get Grass Seeds

Despite being surrounded by grass at every turn, getting grass seeds isn’t as simple as chopping down the first blade you see. In Grounded 2, seeds only drop from a specific type of grass called a Grass Flower—a taller, more elegant stalk with a fuzzy cluster of seeds at the top.

These Grass Flowers are easy to miss if you’re only looking at the ground, which is a mistake I made more times than I’d like to admit. So instead, tilt that camera up and look for tall blades with a seed bundle waving at the sky.

Grass Seeds are crucial for crafting early tools like the Omni-Shovel, and you’ll need even more for future upgrades. So, getting the hang of collecting them now will save you some headaches later.

Step 1: Progress to the Ranger Outpost

To start harvesting seeds, you need the Omni Tool, which you unlock during the main story at the Ranger Outpost (also known as Snackbar). You’ll receive or unlock an axe variant of the Omni Tool around this time. If not immediately, just play a little further to get the upgraded version.

Step 2: Look for the Right Grass

There are two main types of grass you’ll encounter:

  • Regular Grass – Just your average green blade.
  • Grass Flower – The special tall one that contains seeds.

The Grass Flower can be identified by its thicker stem and flower-like seed bundle at the top. You’ll often spot them outside the Snackbar area—conveniently near where you first get your axe.

Step 3: Chop It Down

Using your Omni-Axe, chop the base of the Grass Flower. Seeds will drop as you strike or once the plant falls. Keep your eyes on the falling stalk—thanks to Grounded 2’s quirky physics engine, seeds can bounce, roll, or get stuck midair (Valheim-style). It’s chaos, but kind of fun.

Tip: You don’t always need to chop the whole thing down. Grass Seeds can fall steadily as you strike, like apples from a tree. That means fewer runaway seeds and less clean-up.

Step 4: Pick Up the Grass Seeds

Once they’re on the ground, just walk over them to collect—they go straight into your inventory, unlike grass planks that hog your shoulders. The seeds are surprisingly large but can still be hard to spot if they blend into the grass floor.

Where to Find Grass Seeds Early

If you’re still early in the game, the Snackbar area right outside the Ranger Outpost is the best spot. This is where the game introduces you to the Omni Tool anyway, so it makes sense to start there. Look for a patch of tall grass just beyond the outpost—zoom in, look up, and you’ll find several Grass Flowers ready to be harvested.

This area is generally low-risk and easy to access, which makes it perfect for farming a few seeds without worrying about hostile bugs or complex terrain.

A Note on Other Tall Plants

You might also run into Dandelions or Husky Weeds—these look similar to Grass Flowers but yield Weed Stems, not seeds. Weed Stems are useful, too, but if you’re only after seeds, stick to Grass Flowers and remember: follow the seeds, not the stems.

Wrap-Up: Never Be Seedless Again!

Now that you know what to look for and where to find it, collecting Grass Seeds in Grounded 2 should be a breeze. They’re an essential early-game resource, especially if you’re trying to craft tools, unlock upgrades like the Omni-Shovel, or just want to stockpile materials for your next big base.

Remember to keep looking up, track those falling seeds, and don’t be discouraged if a few bounce into oblivion. That’s just part of life in the backyard.

Happy chopping! Up next, if you’re having trouble keeping your thirst meter under control, check out our guide on how to find clean water, and how to store it using a canteen so you’re never caught thirsty in the wild again.
