Grounded 2 builds on the roots of its predecessor, adding a larger variety of creatures to the survival world. Some of them can be incredibly dangerous and will destroy you in combat. Others, while harmless, present a challenge as they can be difficult to kill. The Garden Snail is one such creature that you’ll come across throughout the game. They are incredibly difficult to kill because they become practically invulnerable when they retreat into their shells. In this guide, we’ll go over two strategies you can utilize to kill them – even if you are in the early game. Let’s get into it!
How to Kill Garden Snail
The Garden Snail is a passive insect in Grounded 2. It doesn’t have a fixed location, and you can find it roaming different parts of the map. The main reason why it’s so difficult to kill is that when you harm it, it will retreat back into its shell.
This can make it incredibly frustrating to kill. Killing the snail is useful because it gives us Raw Snail Meat and Garden Snail Slime. While it says you can bust the Garden Snail Shell, you won’t be able to do it since it requires a Tier 3 tool.
According to developers, you will only be able to do this after the future Winter update. Currently, the only way to get a Snail Shell Fragment is by finishing the story.
With that said, if you want to defeat the garden snail, you can try a variety of strategies. Some players have even suggested using grenades but that is something you won’t unlock till the late game.
Instead, we’ll go over two strategies you can utilize to kill the garden snail at any stage – including early game.
Strategy #1 – Using Melee Weapons
For the first strategy, we’ll simply be using melee weapons. Depending on how far you’ve progressed, the damage you can deal at this point will vary.
In this strategy, you’ll be doing the following rotation:
- Hitting the garden snail once
- Walking away at the right distance
- Waiting for the snail to come out of its shell
- Hitting the snail again.
Repeat all the steps until you defeat the garden snail.
While it is a slow and tedious way, doing so will ensure you get him at any stage without much resources. Eventually, the snail will also get stunned, which will help you dish out even more damage before it wakes up.
A great strategy we suggest is to charge up your melee attacks when you hit them. Since you only get one hit, might as well make it count and speed up the process. You can also try hitting the eyes as these are considered the weak spots.
Additionally, you need to make sure that you retreat to the right distance. If you stay too close, the snail will not come out and if you get too far, it’s possible the snail’s health could reset back to full.

Alternate Strategy
An alternate to this method relies on using the Red Soldier Ant Buggy. If you do not have it yet, we suggest checking out our ultimate red soldier ant buggy guide.
In this method, you’ll be using the buggy to retreat after hitting the snail once. It offers a faster way to get back, allowing you to cover a large distance. Presumably, the farther you are, the quicker the snail is to come out of its shell. Just make sure you do not approach too early.
Some players also claim that getting on and off the buggy causes a glitch where the snail comes out again. While we were not able to verify this, the snail did certainly come out faster. So, you can also try this method and see for yourself.

Strategy #2 – Using Ranged Weapons
If you have better ranged weapons or simply want to shoot from a safe distance, you can use a bow and arrow. The strategy with this works mostly the same. You shoot the snail, wait for it to come out of its shell and shoot again.
At certain points, it will get stunned allowing you to deal damage. In such a case, we recommend pulling out your melee weapon if you do have a decent one.
The benefit of using ranged weapons though is that you can control where the arrow hits. According to some players, the eyes are the weak spots of the garden snail. So, shooting the eyes with charged shots will cause it to get stunned easily.
This method is also a bit tedious, but again it will allow you to reliably kill the snail.

To Sum Up
That’s everything you need to know about killing the garden snail in Grounded 2. You can certainly try out more creative methods like grenades. But you won’t be able to do it until the end game. Both these methods can be done at any stage. However, we do recommend having decent weapons so that your damage output makes the process much faster. Otherwise, it will take you a long time to defeat the garden snail. Also, keep in mind that sometimes the garden snail can reset its health. We aren’t sure if this is a glitch but try not to get too far from it.
