Where Winds Meet gives you some of the most stylish mobility in any wuxia game right now, flying across mountains, sprinting over lakes, zooming across fields like a rocket with a ponytail. But none of this is unlocked by default.
If you’re confused about how to fly, how to water-walk, or why your character still dies from fall damage, don’t worry, I went through all the steps, all the mistakes, and all the “why am I falling into the pond again” moments so you don’t have to.
Here’s the fastest and cleanest guide to unlocking Wind Walking (flying) and Travel Mode (super sprint + water walking) as early as possible.
Let’s jump in, literally.
Step 1: Start the “What Is the Dust Cloud?” Quest

In Region 1, head to the pond on the left side and look for the blue-book quest titled “What Is the Dust Cloud?”
You’ll automatically be led near this fisherman during the main quest, so don’t overthink the search.
Talk to him and he’ll introduce you to the art of Wind Walking, your first taste of aerial movement.
Step 2: Complete the Pot-Jumping Mini Challenge
After the introduction, he’ll spawn several floating pots and ask you to jump across them.
⚠️ IMPORTANT
Talk to him AGAIN before starting or the challenge won’t activate properly.
Two Ways to Beat It
Legit:
- Double jump → triple jump → dash
- Time the gaps carefully
Cheese method (my favorite):
- Miss a jump?
- Pop umbrella → hold charged attack → glide across like a guilty genius.
After completing the jumps, read the small booklet he gives you.
You now have basic Wind Walking, meaning you can jump, dash, and soar around a little.
But… you’ll still die if you fall from too high.
That’s where Step 3 comes in.
Step 3: Unlock True Flying + Fall Immunity (4,000 Region Points)

Open your map and check Regional Progress.
You need 4,000 exploration points in Region 1.
You earn these by:
- Finishing blue-book quests
- Unlocking pillars
- Collecting curiosities (crickets, flowers, beehives, etc.)
- Clearing strongholds
- Finding hidden bosses
- Just exploring the map normally
Once you hit 4,000 points, you’ll receive the Token of Spring and Autumn Festival.
Bring it back to the fisherman and you unlock:
- True Flying (Wind Walking with no fall death)
- Travel Mode (super sprint + water walking)
➡️ But ONLY for this region.
The Big Caveat: Flying Is Region-Locked
Once you leave Region 1, your flying abilities disappear until you repeat the same steps in the new region.
Meaning:
➡️ You must unlock 4,000 exploration points per region to regain flying and Travel Mode.
It sounds annoying, but exploring naturally fills the bar pretty fast.
Unlocking Travel Mode + Water Walking
Travel Mode is basically your Nitro Sprint. Hold your sprint button and your character keeps accelerating until they’re zooming across the landscape, and even running on water.
To unlock Travel Mode, you must:
- ✔ Get 4,000 exploration points
- ✔ Hand in curiosities
Go back to the guy near the Region 1 starting bonfire, the same NPC who gave you your first weapon.
Hand in curiosities such as:
- Purple flowers
- Red flowers
- Crickets
- Beehives
- Special map finds
These unlock movement upgrades like:
- Wind Controlling Magic
- Flying Eaves Chasing Shadows
- Other mobility passives
Curiosities also count toward discovery progress, so you’re leveling two systems at once.
On my level 69 character, the whole process took around 5–6 hours of casual exploration and ended up being 100% worth it.
Downside of Flying (Yes, There’s One)
Flying is insanely fun, but you’ll miss out on curiosities if you spend all your time in the sky.
So here’s the balance:
- Fly when you want speed.
- Walk when you want collectibles.
Especially early game, those curiosities give important passives you don’t want to skip.
BONUS: How to Unlock One of the Strongest Internal Arts (Hand Slammer)
Once you unlock flying, travel from Region 1 all the way to the northern barren wasteland, the zone where a Buddhist temple once stood.
There’s a lone waypoint and an old monk waiting with a blue-book quest.
It’s peaceful, it’s scenic, and at the end you unlock:
Vidic Dharma: The Hand Slammer
This skill is absurdly powerful.
- The normal slam is strong
- The aerial slam deals FOUR TIMES MORE DAMAGE
You can upgrade it using stones, and when paired with a jump-kick art, it becomes a disgusting boss-deleting combo.
Highly recommended to grab as soon as you unlock Wind Walking.
Wrap-Up
Unlocking Wind Walking and Travel Mode turns Where Winds Meet into a completely different game — faster, flashier, and way more fun to explore.
If you follow the steps above, you’ll get:
- ✔ True Flying
- ✔ Super Sprint
- ✔ Water Walking
- ✔ One of the strongest Internal Arts early on
All in just a few hours. Up next, check out our guide on the difference between Drunken Precision vs Rhetoric Edge in Where Winds Meet! One of these choices seemingly appears at the start of the game when you’re creating your character. It’s good to know them before you proceed to choose.
