Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 puts the player on a quest where they must slay the Paintress. This turn based RPG can often be challenging and you’ll need to ensure your party is up to the task. As a result, you will need to start upgrading your weapons and Lumina points as soon as possible. However, the game does not really tell you how to do this at the start of the game. Quite a few players may want to start upgrading their weapons and getting stronger as soon as possible. Not to worry, we have you covered. We’ll show you exactly how to do this in this guide. Let’s dive in!
How to Upgrade Weapons & Lumina
To upgrade weapons and lumina in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you will need to unlock The Curator in the game. Once you do this, you will be able to speak to him at the camp.
Luckily, meeting the Curator is not a missable thing. All you need to do is simply progress through the main story while you are at the Flying Waters portion of the game. Once you do meet him, you will need to defeat him.
Later on, after progressing some more, there will be a small cutscene where The Curator will spawn at your camp. Go up to him and interact with him.

Over here, you should see the options to both Upgrade Weapons and Upgrade Expedition Resources.

Upgrade Weapons
In the Upgrade Weapons menu, you will see all the party members listed with their weapons. You will be able to select which weapon you want to upgrade.
Upgrading weapons will increase their Attack Power, Level and their scaling. You can see the scaling attributes in the form of letter grades with S being the highest and D being the lowest. Your goal should be to increase the attributes that scale the highest.
For example, if a weapon has S scaling in defense, then increasing the Defense will give you a higher damage output.
So, keep track of the stats you want to upgrade alongside your weapons.
To actually upgrade weapons, there is a resource you need in the form of Chroma Catalysts. Chroma Catalysts come in different tiers with higher level weapons requiring higher tier of Chroma Catalysts.
Additionally, the more you upgrade your weapon, the more Chroma Catalysts you’ll need for the next upgrade. This can go all the way to the maximum of Level 33.
As you progress through the story, you’ll start to see more higher tier Chroma Catalysts.
Chroma Catalysts come in the following four tiers:
- Chroma Catalyst
- Used to upgrade Weapons up to Level 3
- Polished Chroma Catalyst
- Used to upgrade Weapons up to Level 9
- Resplendent Chroma Catalyst
- Used to upgrade Weapons up to Level 19
- Grandiose Chroma Catalyst
- Used to upgrade Weapons up to Level 32
- Perfect Chroma Catalyst
- Used to upgrade Weapons up to Level 33.
You can obtain Chroma Catalysts in a variety of different ways, as you progress through the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 story:
- Drops from defeating enemies
- Purchasing from merchants
- Obtaining as ground loot
- Rewards for winning battles.
In short, you do not need to worry too much about getting them. You’ll be able to find plenty of them just by playing and progressing through the game!

Upgrade Lumina
In the Upgrade Expedition Resources menu, you will be able to Upgrade Lumina and Upgrade Tints.
Each character in your party can learn Lumina associated with their Pictos. You can equip Lumina by using Lumina Points, and the effects will be activated once you equip the Pictos.
So, Lumina Points limit how many effects a character can have active at the same time. Typically, you unlock them when your character levels up.
At the Curator, you can unlock additional Lumina Points besides the ones you get from leveling up. To do this, you will need to use the Colour of Lumina resource. You can find these all around the world and also as rewards from battles.
Besides Lumina, you can also upgrade Tints. These are items that you can use for Healing, Energy and Reviving. Each of them requires different resources which you can check at the Curator.

That’s everything you need to know about Upgrading Weapons and Lumina in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Hopefully, you will now be able to upgrade your Weapons and be better prepared for the battles ahead. The Curator will be able to provide you with all manners of services that you’ll need eventually.
