Some people might say that War Thunder’s Matchmaking is broken or even rigged to make an unbalanced team session in order for one to win over the other. Here we will discuss how the Matchmaking system actually works. Let’s get started.
War Thunder – How Matchmaking Works | Explained
Many experienced players are aware that War Thunder employs a Battle Rating (BR) system, on which the matchmaker is based. BRs can range from Reserve (1.0) to top tier (10.7+) depending on the vehicle. The matchmaker ignores vehicle ranks in favor of the progression system, which requires X amount of vehicles of the same rank (typically 6) to advance to the next level.
Matchmaker operates on the highest BR -1.0 concept. That implies the highest BR, as well as any BR within the -1.0 range, will be used to decide each match. Only ¼ of each team’s members are top BR to avoid curb-stomping on lesser BRs.
In a BR 1.3 match, for example, the matchmaker uses the 1.3-1.0 rule, which implies that only BR 1.0 and 1.3 cars are matched, as there are no vehicles on BR 0.3 and 0.7, and only ¼ of the players can have BR 1.3 vehicles. In a BR 6.7 match, for example, the matchmaker uses the 6.7-1.0 rule, which means players with BR 5.7, 6.0, 6.3, and 6.7 vehicles are matched. Furthermore, only 1/4 of the participants can have BR 6.7 vehicles.
If the game mode permits you to bring multiple vehicles into the match, the matchmaker will only take your highest BR into account. If you bring three BR 4.3 vehicles and one BR 5.7 vehicle, the matchmaker will consider you to be a BR 5.7, and you may be paired in a BR 5.7, 6.0, 6.3, or 6.7 match.
As a result, depending on how the game is matched, every vehicle may be able to fight BRs ranging from the lowest BR to n +1.0 (n = your current BR). In an 8.3 battle, you’ll fight cars ranging from 1.0 to 8.3, with the majority of players using vehicles from 7.3, 7.7, and 8.0, with only 1/4 of the players able to utilize vehicles in BR 8.3. If the same vehicle is matched in 9.0, you’ll be up against vehicles from 1.0 to 9.0, with the majority of players utilizing vehicles from 8.0, 8.3, and 8.7, and only 1/4 of players able to utilize vehicles in BR 9.0. The vehicle’s maximum BR may also be matched.
Certain countries will be matched against one another. Germany, Italy, and Japan, for example, may be put against the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, China, and Sweden. So Nation restrictions do exist in BR.
To cut to the chase, Squad BR exists in War Thunder and is decided by the squad’s highest BR player. If a squad has a person with a BR of 9.3 and three other players with a BR of 1.0, the matchmaker will take the highest BR into account, which is 9.3, and everyone may be matched to the maximum BR of 10.3.
I hope this helped to understand the tricky Matchmaking system a bit. Good luck getting paired with your own ranked players!
