Full Guide – Leviathan Floating Islands In Valheim

You can’t build on them, nor even cut the trees for some materials. In the dark nights, they seem to be watching you with their eerie shiny eyes.

They are creatures that are based on the old Nordic writings and mythology. Something that resembled huge sea beasts or living spirit movable islands. In Valheim they are passive creatures who are the source of an important crafting material from their Barnacles.

Each Leviathan has 21 Abyssal Barnacles on its back. Each of them provides 3 – 4 chitin. Chitin is used as an important crafting material for making early high-level gear:

  • The Abyssal Razor – 4 Fine Wood, 2 Leather Scraps, 20 Chitin, and +60 Chitin for fully upgrading it(this is the 3rd best knife in the game)
  • The Abyssal Harpoon – 8 Fine Wood, 3 Leather Scraps, 30 Chitin. This isn’t used as a weapon. This is a tool used for latching on mobs and pulling them to you. It is used for getting Serpent Trophies as well as getting crafting materials like Serpent Scales

Where To Find Them

They are to be found only in the Ocean biome in waters deeper than 30 meters. Leviathans are spawned when the world is generated, which means they will not move, ever. So if you spot it, be sure to mark it on your map. Each 64×64 meter zone has a 1% of generating a Leviathan.

Dock your board not on the Leviathan itself, but right next to it. Make sure it is in a good condition if a quick runaway is necessary. You will spot the Abyssal Barnacles on it. You will need to use a pickaxe melee attack in order to break them open to get then Chitin. You will need to have already defeated the first boss so you will have the Pickaxe.

Submersion Event

Every time you hit the Barnacles there is a 10% chance that the Leviathan will awaken and start to submerge into the deep waters. That is why using higher quality Pickaxes are much better. You will know when the event is activated then you hear it screech and shake. It will do 2 warning screeches.

Make sure you have enough Stamina when you make a run for your boat. Maybe Stamina potions, or eat high Stamina food. If you run out of Stamina while swimming in the ocean you will start to drown. Drowning does 5hp damage every second(takes 20 seconds for full Hp to go down).

If the Leviathan submerges, you are never to see it again. You shall have to find another one. This means that the Chitin is a Finite resource. Have no fears though, you will find plenty of other Leviathans in the world if you keep looking.

I hope this cleared up some stuff for you and got your understanding better of these unique creatures in Valheim. Good luck finding them!
