Harvesting resources plays an important role for the crafting survival experience in Lightyear Frontier. This includes farming and growing plants that are used in all sorts of recipes in the game. For example, you can create Rabbage Oil after growing Rabbages from seeds. Since you’ll be farming a ton in the game, you’ll want to find some way that will allow you to make it more efficient. This is where Composting and Fertilizers can really help you out. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how you can use them for the best results. Let’s get into it!

How To Use Compost & Fertilizer

To use Compost and Fertilizer in Lightyear Frontier, you’ll need to go through the following steps:

  1. Use the Compost Box to create some Fertilizer;
  2. Equip the Fertilizer Ammo on your Watering Gun;
  3. Shoot the Fertilizer ammo at green mounds;
  4. Grow Fertilized Plants and harvest them.

Compost Resources (Creating Fertilizer)

Starting off, you’ll need to Compost items or resources so that you can create some Fertilizer. So, start by crafting a Compost Box

You can craft Compost Boxes after a certain point in the game. This is when you are done when you come across the Zappertwig Plant in Lightyear Frontier. You can use the Zappertwig Oil created from this plant to craft the Compost Box.

Once you have the recipe, build the Compost Box and interact with it.

After you interact with it, you’ll be in the Compost Box menu. On the left hand side, you’ll see all the resources you have that you can place inside the Compost Box.

We recommend that you place Plant Fiber inside as it is the most common and easiest resource you can come by in the game. But it is really up to you to decide which resource you want to compost.

After you place it for composting, you’ll need to wait till the next day. The composting process will turn the items into Fertilizer. Next, we’ll see how you can equip the Fertilizer and actually use it in Lightyear Frontier.

Equip Fertilizer Ammo

Once the Composting process is done, you can take out the Fertilizer and have it in your Inventory. Now, how do you actually use this Fertilizer.

Starting off, you’ll need to equip your Watering Gun using the V key. This is the same gun you use when you are watering your plants for farming.

If you look at the options after you equip it, you’ll see that there is one to change ammo. You can use the R key to change modes on the Watering Gun. In this way, you can equip the Fertilizer Ammo.

Use Fertilizer for Farming

With the Fertilizer ammo equipped, make your way to the farm. Keep in mind that you can only fertilize empty mounds that do not have seeds on them.

After you approach these mounds, you’ll see they are marked by green squares. It means that you can fertilize them by firing your Fertilizer at them.

A fertilized mound will have the Fertilized buff on them.

Next up, you can plant your seeds and let them grow into plants as they normally do. We also have a great guide that shows you How to Get Seeds in Lightyear Frontier.

Once the plants have grown, you’ll notice that they still have the Fertilized buff on them. In fact, even after you harvest the plants, the mounds will still say Fertilized.

Basically, a Fertilizer buff will last for multiple plant cycles. After you’ve harvested from the same mound a few times, you’ll need to place down more fertilizer again.

However, after you harvest plants, you’ll see the true magic of the fertilizers. They allow you to get around 20% more plant resources than you would have gotten with simple water.

So, we strongly recommend you use compost and fertilizers. It will make your farming much more fruitful and efficient!
