Controls in fight games have always been a subject of debate for many years. There are people who swear on the precise inputs of the d-pad. Meanwhile, there are others who prefer the smooth motions of the joystick in movement input. Whatever your camp is in the many camps of fighting game controls, here is probably one of the best controller settings for new players.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room first; D-pad or joystick for movement. Some people say that using the d-pad is more precise, while others think that joysticks shine most when doing diagonal movements for certain moves. While it is true that most fighting game pros use fight sticks, those controllers with large joysticks where you can wrap your entire hand on them, for normal play it’s better to just choose what you’re comfortable with. I myself play with a D-pad when it comes to fighting games.

These are the basic controls that are akin to the controls of other platform fighters like Smash Brothers. Square for attack and Cross for jump, two buttons that you will use a lot. Special is bound to circle and triangle so that wherever your finger was, either chaining from an attack or jump, can easily move to the button to follow up with a special.

Dodge is L1. You’ll need it there because it goes well. This is because all movement-related buttons tend to be to the right like the d-pad or left analog stick. Same with Neutral evade being in L2 as well. Specifically that button because it’s a trigger button and thus is easier to quickly move to and use it.

R1 is set to Neutral attack, and we’ll also be using R1 for picking up items, while R2 is for Neutral special something not as used as a neutral attack but since it’s a trigger button when you do use it’ll be easier, especially when combining with other buttons.

As you can see you have a pattern here, movement is on the left side while attacks are at the right, a great way to simplify things and develop muscle memory.
