MultiVersus: How To Play Morty Guide (Tips, Combos & Gameplay)

Oh jeez Rick, looks like I’m about to beat up some newbies.

MultiVersus is a fun brawler fighting game that’s obviously cut from the same cloth of Super Smash Bros. But instead of a collection of Nintendo characters and guest characters from other franchises, MultiVersus features a plethora of characters from the Warner Brothers. This means you can fight as Batman, Superman, Jason Vorhees, Shaggy, Finn the Human, and more. One such character you can play as is Morty from the popular Rick and Morty show. If you are interested to play as this character, then check out this guide on how to play as Rick’s sidekick in MultiVersus.

How To Play Morty Guide

Despite his scrawny appearance, Morty is actually a Bruiser type fighter that has a focus in horizontal attacks. That means that Morty is primarily used to be a DPS fighter that has a primary focus in dealing as much damage as possible to take down other characters.

If you do not have him unlocked, you can purchase him for 1000 Gleamium or 3000 Fighter Currency. Gleamium is the premium currency while Fighter Currency is what you can grind for in the game. If you want help in trying to get more Fighter Currency fast, then you should check out our guide on how to unlock Fighter Currency fast!

Attacks

In order to understand how you can play as Morty and initiate combos, you will first need to learn his skills. There are two types of attacks that we will be talking about: the normal Attacks and the Specials. For now, let’s talk about the Attacks you can do as Morty:

  • Hold Right + J
    • Armothy Launch!
      • An attack that launches Morty feet first to his opponent.
  • Neutral J
    • Aw Geez, Snakes! (Ground attack)
      • Morty fires a laser projectile that will target any grenades on the field first. If there are no grenades in sight, the laser will be split into two snake projectiles that will launch themselves vertically in opposite directions.
    • Aw Geez, Air Snakes! (Aerial attack)
      • Same as the ground attack, but up in the air instead.
  • Right + J
    • Unresolved Anger Issues (Ground attack)
      • A series of combos that can come from Armothy, finishing up with a large hammer swing from Hammer Morty. If you press the neutral input after the second hit of the combo, Morty will whip out a laser whip instead.
    • Barbarian Instincts (Aerial attack)
      • A charged combo attack of 2 axe swings.
  • Up + J
    • Aw Geez, More Snakes! (Ground attack)
      • Similar to the neutral attack, but the exception is that the laser will be fired upward and the snakes will split horizontally.
    • Power of Fire! (Aerial attack)
      • Morty pulls out an elemental ring that will hit any enemies above him and ignite them.
  • Down + J
    • Plumbus Time!
      • When initiated, Morty starts running with his plumbus on the ground. This will hit any enemy and allow Morty to move freely. If you hold the input while attack, the plumbus will remain out. This is good if you want to apply Cleanse to allies and Weakened to enemies.
    • Armothy Assault
      • Morty unleashes a downward attack that slams downward with Armothy.

Specials

Moving onto Specials, bear in mind that these attacks will require more cooldown compared to his normal Attacks. After all, they are Special attacks. These attacks are useful to either start a combo or end it, so be sure to remember these Specials.

  • Neutral K
    • It’s A Grenade, I Think (Ground attack)
      • Morty chucks out a grenade projectile at his enemies. If you have enough ammo, you can continue to throw out until you run out.
    • Yep, That’s A Grenade (Aerial attack)
      • Same thing will happen as the ground attack version
  • Right + K
    • Power of Earth (Ground attack)
      • A pillar of earth appears in front of Morty when initiated. You can charge this attack to increase how far the pillar will appear in front of Morty. When you strike the pillar with a grenade, the grenade will split into two separate attacks.
    • Another Portal? (Aerial attack)
      • Morty gains armor before a portal appears before him. He will then peek into the portal and step in. If you hold the input, you can aim where Morty will appear when he hops through the portal. Once through, the portal will remain open, allowing for projectiles to pass through it.
  • Up + K
    • Uh, Auto Pilot? (Ground attack)
      • A spaceship is called down that serves as a platform that Morty can go up with.
    • Uh, Auto Pilot? (Aerial attack)
      • Same as the ground attack.
  • Down + K
    • Temporal Back Up (Ground attack)
      • A save point will be saved at his current position. After some time, Morty will be teleported back to the save position and will get healed along with his allies. If you input the attack again before you get teleported, Morty will warp back to the save and leave behind a grenade.
    • Temporal Back Up (Aerial attack)
      • Same as the ground attack.

Combos

Now that you know the Attacks and Special moves, now it’s time for you to learn some combos. These are some basic combos that will require a few tries to get correct, perfect for those that are just starting MultiVersus and are playing as Morty.

  • First Combo
    • Right + K (Ground attack) -> Right + J (Ground attack)
      • A basic ground combo that brings the opponent to you with the side neutral Special before using the side neutral Attack for a combo finisher.
  • Second Combo
    • Down + J (Aerial attack) -> Up + J (Aerial attack)
      • A basic aerial combo. This one requires timing. When you jump, use down attack to slam the opponent down. Immediately use up attack to then attack them while they’re bouncing up from the attack.
  • Third Combo
    • Right + K (Ground attack) -> Down + J (Aerial attack) -> Right + J (Aerial attack) -> Neutral J (Ground attack) -> Down + J (Aerial attack) -> Up + J (Aerial attack) x2
      • A more advanced string of combos this time. You will have to time your attack just at the right time, as there is a chance that you can drop this combo from trying to rush too fast or going too slow.

While we’re talking about combos, you should also learn how to parry as well. Thankfully, we have a guide here that goes in depth on how to parry enemy attacks!

Tips

Now that you know how to play and string together combos as Morty, you should know a couple of things when playing as Morty. Starting off with his Up + K Special, which allows him to be saved if he is thrown off the stage. A great way to save yourself if you manage to recover and regain control just in time.

Always use Aw Geez, Snakes! and Aw Geez, Air Snakes! when your enemies pull out projectiles. This will help not only yourself, but also your teammates if you are playing with other people as the snakes will target projectiles first. This will effectively save yourself and your team the hassle of avoiding enemy projectiles.

Power of Earth is a great combo starter. This essentially sends your enemies towards you when they get hit. It’s also a great way to bring them closer to your teammates. Be sure to also use the Temporal Back Up as well. This can save you and your teammates just by simply placing them around the stage.
