Orthworm Moveset Guide
Here is Orthworm’s recommended set of moves for the current metagame. I’ll explain further in the guide what makes this Pokemon and its moveset especially strong. Let’s get into it!
- Heavy Slam
- Body Press
- Stealth Rock / Iron Defense
- Shed Tail
Heavy Slam
A Steel-type STAB attack that inflicts damage based on the user’s weight. The damage increases as the user outweighs the target. This is very effective on metas like Dragapult, Iron Valiant and can OHKO the ever present Flutter Mane.
Body Press
The user’s Defense stat serves as its Attack, taking into account stat stage modifications. This Fighting type move is very suitable for Orthworm because it has a whopping high basic Defense stat at 145.
Stealth Rock / Iron Defense
You can either choose Stealth Rock for offense or if you’re looking to make your Orthworm bulkier, Iron Defense.
When an opponent switches into battle, you can utilize Stealth Rock to damage them. It is effective to chip down and weaken Pokemon. This also would come clutch to defeat Dragonite easier, as it removes its Multiscale ability.
Iron Defense can aid in increasing its physical bulk, which will make it harder to KO. This is very useful when dealing with physical sweepers. Additionally this can make Orthworm more resistant to status effects.
Shed Tail
This is what makes Orthworm strong in this metagame as Shed Tail, enables him to set up a Substitute for your other Pokemons. Your team now has a free turn to set up without worrying about getting knocked out. You can set your attacker with the substitute, making it harder to defeat.
Additional Tips
Orthworm is the perfect counter and partner to meta Pokemons like Ting-Lu, Garchomp, Great Tusk and even Dragonite that uses Earthquake. Being able to overcome one of its most common weaknesses thanks to Earth Eater makes Orthworm’s ability an extremely strong Pokemon.
Earth Eater would heal this Pokemon for 1/4 of its hp when hit by Ground-type moves. Use this efficiently by baiting out Ground-type moves and then switching in Orthworm.
Overall, depending on the make-up of your team and the metagame you are playing in, the optimum moveset for your Orthworm will vary. Try out various movesets to see which one suits you the best!
