Amazing tactical nostalgic combat from the year 1995 in 3D. The totally redesigned AI allows foes to change their strategies based on the current scenario, making for a combat system that never gets old by forcing you to constantly adapt.
It has gotten a remaster in the past couple of days and both nostalgic and new players are wondering if it is worth the check. In this review, we will go over the good and bad sides of things and then give you our final opinion on whether you should get it or not. Let’s get started.
Is It As Good As The Original Or Better?! – Tactics Ogre Reborn Review
Pros
We shall start off on the right foot! What are the goods of this game?
Gameplay
The gameplay is simply fantastic. If you are a newcomer to the franchise or simply a nostalgic seeker player of the original, you will get the same amazing feeling and rewarding dungeon-clearing simulator.
You will get the very different types of FF enemies that you would expect to encounter with big boss battles. Then you shall wander off and sometimes get lost in the big dungeons with puzzles.
Combat & Classes
You will need to have a tactical approach to every type of combat scenario. The beauty of this is that you will have so many classes and types to choose from. The combat will be different each time and every type of class or character you choose will give you a whole different feel.
It works just as in the original although it might be more punishing in this one. Still, it is a very good combat system that we are happy the devs have not changed it all that much.
Visuals & Character Models
The visuals are what you expect and are just like the original but slightly made better with the 3D element to it. The maps are big and you are able to physically tell the difference between where you are fighting and entering in making it a very good overall ambient feel.
The character models are where this game shines through. You will have so many classes and so many different monsters that are done by hand and all different from each other. You won’t feel as though you’re fighting the same enemies because of this.
New Additions In The Reborn
They have actually gone ahead and changed a lot of the things that came off as weird or unnecessary in the previous original title and actually did a very good job at it too. So if you’re looking for something extra better than the original, this game offers it.
The level cap has been changed and you can “over level” a few times if you get stuck, but you have to fight fairly. RT is gone. No matter what, it all has to go through MP. Now Finishers do damage instead of being the last thing you can do. They went right back with the first leveling system they had. No more leveling up in a class which is the best thing ever!
There are many little changes like this that make the better overall feel of the game much better and different than the original at times.
Cons
What can be the bad of Tactics Ogre Reborn?
Price
Without a doubt the biggest downside of this game. It is priced at $49.99 and definitely doesn’t live up to this price. It is a Square Enix publisher title and they do know how to make the price much higher than what it really needs to be.
So we definitely recommend that you wait for a sale to be getting this game. There are very big discounts that you can occasionally find for this game that can take it down to around $25 dollars at times.
You can just buy the original version and it will do just as well as this one. It is kind of a steal that these new game publishers do these days.
Locked Behind Story Progress
Class modifications now require special items that can only be used once. You can sometimes get these from fights, and the most basic ones can be bought in shops. Before, class changes only had stat requirements.
As the story goes on, the level cap goes up. For example, for the second battle, the level cap is 3, for the third battle, it’s 5, and so on.
This means that you can’t really move up in class until you finish the story, which severely limits how you can play this game. This is by far the WORST thing they’ve done, and it makes no sense at all.
Overall & Rating
Tactics Ogre Reborn Review: Is It As Good As The Original Or Better?
Summary
Overall this game will give you the same feeling that the original and much better FF tactics that Tactics Ogre gameplay had. It is a very fun game that will give you a lot of options to choose from and you’ll be able to invest a lot of hours in it without getting bored. That being said, the price is extremely high so we definitely recommend that you wait for it to go down on a sale.
