Even though the RTS genre is slowly and painfully dying off, there are still hybrid games out there that are carrying the torch. Games like the Total War series have their RTS battles along with turn-based campaigns or Sovereign 2 that mixes it with grand strategy. The RTS genre is still alive and kicking and we need more!

The Great War Western Front is one of the newest RTS games out there and if you can’t tell already, it’s set in World War 1! The game can be quite complex and unforgiving at times so in this guide we’ll show you some tips and tricks!

Beginner’s Guide For The Great War Western Front

In The Great War Western Front, there are a lot of mechanics that you’ll need to learn. You can’t just plop down a trench, place units on it, and then make them cross no man’s land hoping to win. The only thing they’re going to win is an early trip to the grave!

Here are some tips to make the game easier for new players!

Reconnaissance

Knowing the enemy and what they have is the key to victory in any conflict. In the map view you can use different Intel abilities to learn the composition of the forces adjacent to the hex you choose. The Allies already have Region Intel unlocked at the start and the Central Powers will need to research that first.

Both sides need to research the other types of Intel. Try to get Army Intel as early as possible so you can see the actual units on the next hex. With this knowledge, you can plan for an attack.

Intel isn’t just for the campaign screen but also for the battles as well. Observation Balloons can be expensive with 150 supplies, but they can show a large portion of the map. Just remember to keep these balloons defended with machine gun nests and trenches unless you want them destroyed by advancing enemy forces!

Also, remember to raise your balloons when the battle starts or they’ll just be a waste! Remember to also lower the balloons when the enemy sends aircraft to shoot them down at the later stages of the war.

Focusing Forces and Supply

When you’re on the map or campaign screen you can try to focus your forces on one area. Doing so will not only increase the number of units you can attack with but also the overall supply of that area.

The downside to this is that one hex can only attack once, and you usually need to win multiple times to conquer a hex! So, it’s up to you to find a balance between stacking up units and spreading them out for multiple attacks.

Speaking of Supplies, there are a lot of ways that you can get more supplies in the game besides stacking units. You can also purchase supplies with gold or through structures like the Storage buildings that you can research. Having these buildings will increase the supply cap of an area.

Infantry and Support

If you send your men to charge a trench without any support they’ll more likely die before they even reach the trench. Even if they do, they’ll be so badly damaged that they’ll be quickly defeated. Never send your troops attacking without any support.

Use units like Artillery to suppress or even destroy machine gun nests. You can even use Artillery to fire gas both non-lethal and lethal later on to cover your advance. Infantry in this game, whatever their quality, will always melt in the open if they’re fired upon.

The main meat and potatoes of your advance are Artillery suppressing trenches and machine gun nests followed by Infantry charging in and taking those trenches.

Remember that Light Artillery deals less damage to trenches but can use Rolling Barrages or Smoke Rounds. Heavy Artillery causes more damage and can use Gas Shells and Air Burst shells.

Congratulations you now know some great tips and tricks for playing The Great War Western Front. Now go out there and win that world war so we won’t have to do a second one!
