The Shinigami, also known as the Soul Reaper race, has one of the most complete sets of tools in Type Soul and we’ll guide you through every part of it.
Shinigami are the “jack-of-all-trades” race, making them extremely versatile and easy to use for most players. They’re great if you don’t like the more “gimmicky” abilities of the other races!
In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about the Shinigami race in Type Soul.
Complete Shinigami Guide
Gameplay Basics
Shinigami, unlike the other races in Type Soul, have access to a complete arsenal of weapons known as “Zanpakuto”.
You’ll use these weapons for your basic attacks, as well as for unique special attacks called “Critical” which you can do by pressing the “C” key.
There are a lot of different weapon types, and which one you use will mostly depend on your personal playstyle!
The other key aspect of the Shinigami is their Shikai abilities. These can be acquired by obtaining Shikai EXP and Meditating by pressing the “M” key.
While Meditating, you will also see your character’s thoughts. Pay attention to these thoughts, as they will tell you about how to obtain more Shikai EXP!
If you have enough Shikai EXP, you will get to face a boss after you Meditate enough times. Defeat the boss and you’ll get one of the Shikai Powers at random.
Note that you will need to Meditate up to 6 times, with each Meditation session taking up to 5 minutes. Avoid moving while you Meditate and wait for your character to stand up on their own.
Each Shikai gives you extra movesets with new abilities in addition to your weapons. We’ll go over them in more detail later on in this guide.
In addition to the Shikai Powers, you can also get Bankai. They work similarly, providing you with extra abilities and movesets based on the same elements as Shikai.
That said, Bankai is much harder to get than Shikai, but it’s also much stronger!
If you wish to learn how to unlock Bankai, feel free to check out our full guide detailing the entire process of unlocking Bankai.
Shinigami Build Tips
When it comes to building your Shinigami character, you will want to primarily focus on the Kendo Skill Tree.
Thanks to its versatility, it works great with nearly all of the Shinigami’s weapons and Shikai/Bankai abilities!
Generally speaking, most players will want to go for a build that has 45-50 Skill Points in Kendo and the rest on Speed. We covered this in our article about the best builds for every race, as well!
Kendo’s abilities pair extremely well with pretty much every combination of weapons and Shikai you can think of. Plus, it’s never bad to have some extra Speed to make it easier to land combos!
Of course, though, there are some more unique niche builds that can also excel with the right setup.
For example, focusing on the Medical Skill Tree is a great idea if you’re going to primarily use the Blood Shinkai and Bankai.
Overall, the Shinigami has a lot of versatility when it comes to builds, it just depends on what you want to focus on.
Weapons | Zanpakuto
As we said before, the Shinigami get access to a large variety of weapons known as Zanpakuto. Here’s a breakdown of all of them:
- Dagger – Extremely fast weapons with relatively low damage and range. They more than make up for their flaws by allowing you to easily combo into your abilities, including the various Shikai powers, though.
- Dual Swords – Dual-wielded pair of swords, has decent speed and attack animations. It has no particular stand-out features or attacks, but it’s a pretty solid all-rounder.
- Greatsword – A large bulky sword that you can swing in wide arcs. Great range thanks to its sweeping swings, but slow due to its weight. Very strong, but requires effort to use effectively.
- Hammer – Massive hammer, somewhat slow but can break enemies’ guard with ease. Its Critical sends enemies away, which makes it hard to land combos.
- Katana – Blade that allows for quick attacks and decent range. Very easy to use thanks to its versatility and ability to combo into abilities.
- Longsword – A “jack-of-all-trades” weapon with good range, damage, and speed. Currently, though, it stands as the best weapon for Shinigami due to its powerful Critical, which allows for easy combos.
- Scythe – No better weapon for a Shinigami than a scythe, at least when it comes to style! The scythe is fast and has decent damage, on top of having one of the best Criticals available.
- Spear – Despite what you might assume, the Shinigami’s spear in Type Soul doesn’t have much range. The weapon is mostly used to deal quick spinning attacks, with its Critical being particularly strong.
- Twinblade – Two blades connected by a midsection, allowing you to attack with spinning dance-like attacks. It’s rather slow, though, so most players avoid it.
Overall, we highly recommend the Katana, Longsword, and Dagger. Their speed and versatility make them fit every playstyle and build!
Shikai & Bankai Elements
As we detailed in the basics, the Shinkai and Bankai are the bread and butter of the Shinigami race. They are divided into multiple elements, each one giving you different abilities.
You can press Z, X, or C to use your Shikai powers. Press T or G to use your Bankai powers.
Of course, you’ll have to unlock them first, as we detailed in the basics section!
Now, here’s a quick breakdown of each element and their abilities:
- Berserk – This unique element relies mostly on its passives. The lower your health, the stronger your basic attacks are. Dealing damage will also give you Limitbreaker stacks, which can be converted to a Defense Buff!
- Blood – Gives you access to powerful moves that consume HP when used. Can restore HP by landing attacks, but also pairs really well with the Medical Skill Tree.
- Confusion – Gives you access to abilities that can inflict Confusion, which disorients other players by messing with visuals on their end.
- Creation – Allows you to summon multiple floating blades. You can throw the floating blades at foes, or have them spin around you for defense.
- Fire – One of the most straightforward elements the Shinigami has access to in Type Soul. Gives you access to strong AoE melee attacks that use flames to deal high damage.
- Flower – Primarily focuses on Area of Effect attacks and projectiles. Meant mostly to pressure foes into making mistakes, it also has a fast AoE guard-breaking attack.
- Ice – Gives you access to ranged and melee attacks that can freeze enemies for a brief moment, rendering them immobile. Also has access to a counter that works even against ranged attacks!
Shikai & Bankai Elements Continued
- Ink – Has abilities that allow you to slow down enemies and disable their skills, while also dealing decent damage. Also has exclusive access to the Brush weapon type!
- Lightning – One of the most powerful elements for Shinigami in Type Soul, as it allows you to teleport toward the enemy and stun them with fast strikes.
- Shadow – Gives you control over the shadows. You can use them to sneak toward enemies, apply marks that can instakill weakened foes, or summon tendrils of darkness that slam your foes for high damage.
- Theatre – Focuses on teleporting techniques that are extremely hard to avoid, and also has a Counter which can parry enemy attacks and deal damage.
- Water – Mostly meant for controlling the battlefield with Area of Effect attacks that can ragdoll enemies. Low damage, but can disrupt enemies easily.
- Wind – Primarily focuses on binding enemies to prevent them from moving. Deals very little damage, so it’s rather niche.
- Zangetsu – This Shikai and Bankai are all about Area of Effect attacks. Gives you access to devastating melee attacks that cover huge areas, making them great when fighting multiple enemies.
With all that said, now you know everything you need to know about the Shinigami class and its various tools! Now go out there and become the best Soul Reaper in Type Soul.
