There are a few categories of crafting currencies that you will meet through playing the game. These can affect your gear and your skin runes. If you have the blue weapon, you cannot upgrade to yellow or red, and you need first to downgrade to white grade. You can downgrade with the Reversion Essence. After doing that, you will use the Quality Birth Essence, and it will raise the percentage of the weapon.
Then use the Magic Upgrade Essence until you unlock three slots, then you can use the Magic Birth Essence and get some good stats. If you get a good slot, you can use the Magic Imbue Essence that will randomly choose the stats for the two slots, but for the first one, it will stay the same.
If you want to add one more slot, you can use the Magic Expansion Essence. To make the weapon yellow, you will use the Rare Upgrade Essence. If you don’t have the Rare Upgrade Essence, you can purchase it from Joyce, then you need to craft it, and you will have it. If you have the stats that you have in the slots you don’t like, you can get it randomly from Rare Birth Essence to give you better stats.

Maybe the game was different 9 months ago when this was written but I upgrade from blue to yellow all the time without dropping down to white, I’ll wait and get 3 good options while blue then make it rare as plain magic birth essences are far more plentiful than rare ones.I’ll sometimes use the random change when out of blue and have gone straight from normal to rare totally skipping the magic level, which I don’t like because I like to get hit rate or physical damage options before going to rare.
