Now that Frostpunk 2 is out, players both old and new are going to be introduced to mechanics that try to mix things up a bit and add more layers of complexity and depth to the hit dystopian city building game. At a certain point of the game, you will need to start shifting over to oil as a fuel source, and in this guide, we will be showing you where you can set up the pumps for it!
Where to Put Oil Pumps
If you are playing the game’s story mode, you will eventually reach a point where you can transfer resources over from one of your colonies. In the example for this article, this will be the oil that New London desperately needs.
By this point of the game, you will now be asked to modify your generators so that you can actually utilize the oil as a fuel source throughout the city. To do this, you are going to need some oil pumps.
Upon choosing to lead the city towards defeating the frost, you will unlock the Oil Pumps generator upgrade that will allow you to actually build them. So where should they go in the city?
Choosing Spots for the Oil Pumps
As the “Defeat the Frost” objectives state, your first oil pumps will be built in the Central District as an upgrade to the city’s generators. This will require the following resources:
- 200 Workforce
- 200 Heatstamps
- 100 Prefabs
- 1 Core
Once you have all of the required materials for it, you just have to start construction and wait for it to finish. Simply click anywhere within the white outline that will appear when you hover over the center of the city.
The only things you really need to keep in mind are that these pumps will also generate squalor and that the generator will only work with oil as a fuel source. The former, in particular, is something you will be dealing with quite a lot over time.
There are various ways to offset the increase in squalor after building the oil pumps. Among these is the construction of filtration towers and waste management facilities in their respective districts. Acquiring materials is another way to prevent squalor from getting too high.
As an absolute last resort, you can also disable districts that are also causing it to increase. This is not really ideal, and you may not need to resort to such measure early on, but it’s definitely a viable option if necessary.
And that is everything you need to know about these oil pumps that you have the option of constructing early on in the story, as well as how to deal with some of its drawbacks. There are many more things to learn and discover after this, but this is a significant step towards the city’s progress!
