After entering the Gauntlet of Shar in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll soon be tasked to find the Umbral Gems to help your Shadowheart friend. To become the Dark Justiciar, you have to retrieve 5 Umbral Gems that are placed across the map, often behind big monsters or confusing labyrinths.

We’ll show you where they are and the safest way to get in and get out of monsters-infested areas.

All Umbral Gems in Gauntlet of Shar

After a short dialogue scene with Shadowheart upon entering the area, you will have to start looking for the Umbral Gems. The altar already has one Umbral Gem installed to show you what it looks like and it’s time to look the other 4.

From the altar, to the right where you can see this bench, use Gale and teleport there with Misty Step to save yourself time from traveling and fighting the monsters.

Sneak into the area and go behind the nets to safely teleport to the first Umbral Gem on the stairs. Grab it and teleport back to behind the nets.

Instead of where you came from, go through the backside of the net which has another way out of the room. Jump through the ledge and you’ll be back to where you teleported in. Below is how exactly you should go to avoid the hound that patrols the area.

Use Misty Step to go back to the altar and put the Umbral Gem on the altar.

The second Umbral Gem is on the other side of the area. As usual, use Misty Step to teleport down and keep going. To the right is a book that you can read, talking about the trial that one must go through. It’s necessary to read this to officially be allowed entry.

Additionally, you can search the body of the guard who hints that you have to search the library for this book.

The plaque under the giant wooden door will tell you this is the Treasure Room. Open it and you’ll see a statue. Upon approaching it, you’ll go into another cutscene telling you that the bowl has seen blood sacrifices before. Spill some of yours and it’ll unlock the door to the trial which is the Soft-Step Trial.

Gale’s Misty Step makes this a lot easier. After hiding behind the box upon entering, wait until the Shadow is moving the other way to sneak to right behind this doorway.

Cast another Misty Step to next to this lever here, while the Shadow is looking the other way. And go up the stairs and you’ll see the statue in a large room at the end. Grab the second Umbral Gem and then interact with it again to be teleported directly out of the room. You’ll have also finished the first trial.

Unto the next trial, now head to the room next door. Like the previous trial, spill some of your blood on the statue to unlock the door to the trial chamber. The third Umbral Gem is pretty straightforward, which is the Self-Same Trial.

Go up the stairs on your right and lit up the bonfire before heading higher. You’ll see someone waiting in front of the bonfire so familiar it’s uncanny. Because it is your mirrored-self standing in ambush. So make sure to sneak up.

After you win the fight, the third Umbral Gem will be on the floor. They will also drop the rare Killer’s Sweetheart Ring. Interact with the Umbral Transporter to send yourself back to the front door of the trial.

Head out the door and go left from here. Go down the winding stairs to another doorway underneath. The plaque should read “Her most sacred path” and this is where you can get the final Umbral Gem. Yet another statue will need you to spill your blood. Immediately, move away from the golden tiles in front of the statue because you don’t want to spill your blood there.

The final trial is the trickiest of all because you have to walk on an invisible path and it’s the Faith-Leap Trial. The answer is on the floor tiling near the statue. And that’s why we told you to immediately remove yourself from the tiles here, so you don’t bleed on it. Take the route on the right and follow the path as shown below.

At the end is the Umbral Gem you’re looking for. Touch the Transpositional Flux and you’ll be warped back to the front door of the trial. Head out and back to the altar to finish the quest!
