Baldur’s Gate 3 is the kind of game that rewards you for having a creative approach towards progressing through different scenarios. This extends towards difficult boss fights as well. Rather than confronting a boss head on and letting them hand you your glutes, you could give the situation a second look-see if you missed out on anything important.

This applies to Balthazar as well, you’ve seen how annoying he can be when he constantly excretes poisonous gas every turn. That will all go away with this guide. Erase him from existence with just the right amount of cheese!

Balthazar will appear more than once in Act 2. So, if you missed out on killing him early, he’ll come back stronger than ever after you complete the trials in the Gauntlet of Shar. There are multiple ways to get rid of him without having to play fair. You can either turn him into a harmless animal or push him off the edge without his consent. Here’s how you can have your way with him.

You will need the Level 4 Transmutation Spell, Polymorph. When you arrive back in Nightsong’s Prison, Balthazar will be there. Make sure that you’re sneaking and remain out of his sights. Notice how we set aside a save before casting the spell? A shameless act of save scumming, but we need him to fail on his Saving Throw in order for this to work.

While he’s in sheep form, he won’t be able to do much. This includes calling for help, reviving his allies, or throwing noxious gasses towards you. Now, he’ll only have less than 5 HP, and the only thing you’ll have to worry about is his Armor Class.

Of course, he’ll turn back into his original form once you land a hit on him, but that’s okay. Now he’s in a vulnerable spot, and he won’t even acknowledge it. All you have to do now is use a Pushing Attack to send him off the playable area, killing him instantly.

If you want to earn a little bit more experience, you can let him summon his allies first. This will require reloading more saves as you’ll never know where he might run to during his turn. Once you get rid of him, make use of Shadowheart’s Turn Undead and hope that your targets fail on their saving throw.

You don’t even have to trigger a fight! If you see Balthazar standing next to Nightsong, position yourself in front of him. If you’re using a melee character use the Shove bonus action. Make sure that he’ll tumble off the platform while doing this. Another option would be to send him flying (again) with Eldritch Blast.

Ambushing him before the fight won’t get you any experience. The sheep method will however, if you push him off during the fight. Another thing to keep in mind is that you won’t be able to loot his corpse, as there is no corpse to be found. A fair price to pay for the headache you just avoided.

Here we have Alexis, he's been gaming ever since the second Famicom came out. Which is probably the reason why he goes back to platformers every now and then. Somewhere down the line he started getting more and more fascinated about looking at maps change colors for three to eight hours straight. If he's not out strategizing and beating the life out of his space bar in that order there's a good chance you can find him playing an FPS or talking someone's ear out about how game balance gets in the way of realism. You can tell that he really likes getting the full experience of whatever he gets his hands on.
