When you first start the game, it can be overwhelming to understand the job and weapon system. If you go to the Job Tree, you can see that you can unlock different skills under your job using job points.
Some job types can be unlocked by completing a path in a specific job tree. On your Job Tree, you will see the icon that corresponds to your job at the top. Now go to your weapons and equipment and you will see these icons beside your equipment.
This means that your equipment will increase your affinity according to the job icon beside the equipment. This feature is called Job Affinity. You can naturally increase your Job affinity without the use of equipment by unlocking passives in your job tree.
However, certain equipment can increase your Job Affinity even further. If you go to the Battle Settings and press square, you will see the amount of Job Affinity you need to gain stat bonuses. For example, if you have 20% Dragoon Affinity, you will gain 2 Agility.
You do not have to match your job to the Job Affinity of your weapon. You need to focus, however, on getting the highest amount of Job Affinity in one Job. This is because you can unlock higher stat bonuses the higher your Job Affinity is.
While it is not necessary to match your Job with your Job Affinity, you can gain stat bonuses that are helpful for your job if you match them.
You can also mix and match the Job Affinity of your weapons and equipment. This way, you can get different stat bonuses as long as you meet the Job Affinity percentage criteria.
