World of Warcraft: How the Puzzling Cartel Chip Works (Dinar Guide)

Your chips are limited, but your options aren't, make each one count!

Whether you’re raiding weekly, diving deep into Mythic+ keys, or just logging in to gear up casually in World of Warcraft, the new Puzzling Cartel Chip system (aka Dinars) in Season 4 is one of the few deterministic ways to get the loot you actually want. If you’ve ever been cursed by RNG week after week, this guide is for you. I’ll walk you through exactly how the Dinar system works, what to prioritize, and how to avoid common traps, because let’s be honest, with only three Chips total, every choice matters.

How the Puzzling Cartel Chip Works (Dinar Guide)

Let’s break it down from the top. These Puzzling Cartel Chips, also lovingly called Dinars, are a new currency in Season 4 of Dragonflight that allow you to buy specific gear, finally, right?

You can spend them on Hero or Mythic Track versions of:

  • Raid trinkets
  • Very rare raid items
  • Limited-time Glettech weapons
  • Mythic+ trinkets

How to Earn Puzzling Cartel Chips

Starting May 13 (NA) / May 14 (EU), a weekly quest near the Great Vault becomes available. Complete it by:

  • Killing 4 raid bosses
  • Completing 4 Mythic+ dungeons
  • Or mixing both, any combo works

Important: This progress is character-based, not Warband-wide.

How the Quest Rewards Work

  • Week 1: 3 Chips (enough to buy one item right away).
  • Weeks 2–7: 1 Chip per week.

So if you stay on top of it, you’ll earn 3 total Cartel Chips, no more, no less. No catch-up system if you miss a week. You can finish it later, but it delays your rewards.

What Can You Buy With Dinars?

With Cartel Chips, you can buy:

  • Hero Track versions of raid and Mythic+ trinkets, very rare raid loot, and Gallytech weapons
  • To unlock Myth Track versions:
    • For raids: Kill the corresponding boss on Mythic.
    • For Mythic+:
      • Time all 8 dungeons at +12 or higher
      • Unlock the Resilient Key system
      • Hit ~2950+ rating

Bad news for M+ weapon hunters, special M+ weapons aren’t available via Dinar purchases.

What to Buy With Your Cartel Chips

Let’s talk about what’s actually worth your hard-earned Chips.

1. Know Your Player Type

Before deciding what to buy, it really depends on what kind of player you are:

  • If you’re only going to have access to Hero Track items (i.e., you’re not a Mythic raider and you’re not doing +12 keys), the decision is pretty straightforward. Just ask: Are any of the Hero Track items an upgrade for me?
    • It’s probably not going to be the weapons, crafted weapons using Gilded Crests will likely beat Hero Track raid weapons.
    • Trinkets, however, are where you’ll find the most value. Look at options like Hero Track: House of Cards or Eye of Kezan, pick what benefits your spec the most.
  • If you’re progressing into Mythic and can earn Myth Track versions, you’ll need to be more strategic.
    • You’ve probably already done +12 dungeons and taken down Mythic Gallywix.
    • Your goals may include pushing higher M+ keys or preparing for next season.
    • If that’s the case, think about what will help you the most in the next tier, but also keep in mind that many of these items won’t last more than 1–2 weeks into Season 4.

2. Trinkets > Everything Else

Trinkets continue to be the highest value purchase, especially because crafted trinkets aren’t competitive this expansion.

  • Jastar Diamond is a standout item, especially for tanks and healers. It’s one of the few that might stay on your character into Week 2 of the next tier. If you have access to the Myth Track, this is a top purchase.
    • Don’t buy it on Hero Track unless you know you won’t ever unlock the Myth version. In that case, a high-item-level crafted ring might actually outperform it.
  • Class-specific trinkets from dungeon or raid loot pools (e.g., Vexie and the Gear Grinders, Reverb Radio, or Mug’s Moxie Jug) can be worth considering, but only if you won’t get them from drops.
    • For example, Mug’s Moxie Jug is powerful, but only ~5 people in your raid want it, and it’s not that rare, so maybe just wait and get it from a drop.
  • On the other hand, highly-contested trinkets like Eye of Kezan or Jastar Diamond are worth buying, because good luck rolling against 18 other people every week.

3. Weapons & Gear Picks

Weapons: If you’re a 2H user and the raid weapon is your BiS (best-in-slot), and very rare, this could be worth a Myth Track purchase. These are big-impact items, but again, weigh that against how many other people are vying for it and how likely it is to drop.

Other high-impact gear:

  • Chrombustable Bomb Suit (from Gallywix) is great for tanks, but it’s low competition. Only one or two tanks will want it. If you raid weekly, you’ll probably get it eventually, so maybe don’t rush to buy it.
  • Cloaks: There’s a raid cloak you can buy if yours is super under-leveled. Don’t buy this over trinkets or weapons, but it’s an okay “luxury” choice if you’ve got nothing else to spend on.

4. Hero vs. Myth Track Planning

This is where people make mistakes. If you burn a Chip on a Hero item, you might regret it next week when you unlock the Myth version. Plan your 3 purchases wisely.

Example:

  • Want Jastar, Eye of Kezan, and a weapon?
  • That’s 3 items, but if you buy Jastar on Hero now, you might not have enough Chips for the Myth version later.

Don’t get tunnel vision. Think long-term. If you’re actively progressing Mythic bosses like Giwix, optimize your character now, don’t worry as much about “what will last into next season.” Most of these items won’t. Unlike something like Cirlet of the Lost Maven (which lasts forever), these raid items are transitional.

5. Don’t Trust the Vault

The Great Vault is… well, let’s call it “emotionally volatile.” If there’s a trinket you desperately need, buy it. Don’t let your entire season ride on Vault RNG. Dinar purchases are guaranteed, your sanity will thank you.

6. Be Honest With Yourself

This is maybe the most important point:

  • Are you really going to complete this quest every week for 7 weeks?
  • If you’re thinking, “Yeah, I’ll just buy it if I don’t have it by late June,” but also suspect you’ll stop playing by early June… you’re not getting three purchases. You’re getting one or two.

Same goes for alts:

  • To my knowledge, Cartel Chips and the track progress are character-specific, not Warband-wide. So ask yourself: “Am I really going to complete 7 weeks of raid kills on this alt?”
    • If the answer is “No,” then prioritize your highest-impact purchase first, don’t wait.

7. Cosmetics? Nah.

Do not use Cartel Chips on appearances unless you’re completely done with all meaningful upgrades. There’s a free reward track that unlocks all weapon appearances. Save your Chips for power, not pixels.

TL;DR – Cartel Chip Cheat Sheet (or List)

  • Hero Track only? → Buy trinkets
  • Myth Track access? → Buy Jastar, Eye of Kezan, or BiS weapons
  • Don’t waste Chips on Hero gear if you might get the Myth version
  • Vault RNG sucks → Dinars don’t
  • Plan for 1-3 total Chips, no more
  • Skip cosmetics unless you’ve already got BiS gear

Wrap-Up

The Dinar system in World of Warcraft might not be perfect, but it’s a welcome bit of control in a loot system that’s often anything but. Just remember: your Chips are limited, but your options aren’t, make each one count. Let me know in the comments what you’re spending your Chips on, and if there’s a sneaky pick or strategy you’ve discovered. Good luck out there, and may your rolls be ever in your favor!
