Team Fortress 2: Spy Guide | How To Cloak

All sneaky beaky like!

Team Fortress 2 is one of those earlier big games that made an impact in the gaming community. It’s the game that helped future games like Overwatch be successful and despite it’s age it still has a solid player base. You might have heard that the public lobbies of the game is filled with bots, and you would have heard right, but there are bastions of servers out there holding out and are active in removing these bots so that players can enjoy the fun. If your fun is running behind enemies and stabbing them, then you should play the spy. In this guide we’ll show you how to effectively use the cloak to your advantage.

Spy Guide: How To Cloak | Team Fortress 2

For the purpose of making this guide shorter, we won’t be covering all of the different items that can help you cloak as a spy. We’ll only be covering the default kit since that’s where all spies start from, and the lessons learned here can be applied once you get other cool items.

Basics

Cloaking is just making yourself invisible. Once you’re cloaked you have a small cloak bar that shows you how much time you have left. You recharge this bar by staying uncloaked, but you can also recharge it while in the middle of a cloak by taking ammo boxes around the map. This can be great if you want to prolong your sneakiness!

Things to Remember

De-cloaking to get that backstab is great, but remember that in doing so you’ll make a lot of sound. Veteran Team Fortress players know what the sound of an un-cloaking spy is and will try to hunt you down the moment they hear it. Try to uncloak in a different room, behind cover or when it’s noisy to stay hidden. Backstabs are also quite noisy so make sure to get out of the area if you don’t want to fight after a backstab.

When cloaked players can still bump into you, so make sure you keep out of their way unless you want them to shoot at you. Speaking of shooting, you can still get hit while being cloaked so avoid crossfires or projectiles like missiles and grenades from soldiers and demomen respectively. Of course there will be times where you’re just unlucky and someone randomly shoots at a direction and kills you!

Congratulations you now know how to effectively cloak as a Spy in Team Fortress 2, now go out there and be sneaky! Many thanks to Jontohil2 for showing everyone how to do this, if you need more tips and tricks go check their video out here: TF2: Spy Psychology – How to Cloak – YouTube
