Ballista’s were a long awaited feature to be added onto Valheim, and they were finally added onto Valheim Mistlands. Yay! You put them on as defenses and decide to go out into the wild, since your home is now protected by the ballista’s you set up. What you don’t know is that they take their jobs a little too seriously, because if you approach the ballista’s, they will open fire on you. Yes, they will kill you where you stand. Stupid, right? Not to worry, with this guide, we will get that issue sorted out.

Angle the Ballista’s or Get Some Cover

The ballista turns from side to side to where their front legs are, meaning that the ballista has a 90 degree angle killzone. Anything in front of the killzone will be, obviously, killed. Anything behind it is safe. The ballista also has an attack range of 28 meters max, meaning that if you were to get out of the 28 meters, you will be safe.

The best way to get the ballista to not kill you when you approach is by putting them in a high tower and angle them so that they do not attack you when you approach from the path to your home. At this point, the ballista is only really good for attacking flying mobs, because putting them any lower will make them shoot anything that moves, even you.

The ballista will be tweaked in the future, as this is obviously not a fun way to set up ballista’s if you are going to worry about getting shot by them. But the devs will surely fix this in the future.
