Anime Defenders: Best Method to Farm Tokens Fast in Update 5

Anime Defenders just got a huge new update, though it is incredibly divisive and a massive chunk of the community has expressed their disappointment in it. If we look past that, there is a ton of grinding involved in the new realm they introduced, and it requires you to rack up a currency known as tokens. In this guide, we will give you the one tip that anybody can ever give you when it comes to farming it.

Best Method to Farm Tokens Fast in Update 5

Before we begin, it should be noted that the newcontent that makes use of these tokens requires you to be at least level 30. Even if you barely meet that requirement, you probably won’t be able to do much yet, and let us explain why down below.

Anime Defenders athenyx's realm mechanics summarized

There is no easy way to put it, but the “best” way to farm tokens is to simply have a lot of top tier units. More specifically, you will need some really powerful ground units.

This is because there is a new enemy type that spawns exclusively in maps within the Athenyx realm that was introduced in this update. These are called Burrow units, and only ground characters can attack them.

No, hybrid units cannot hit them. This is a huge disadvantage as there are only a handful of ground units in the top tiers, and they are mainly secrets, making them really hard to get. Burrow units have an icon above their heads, which looks like this:

If you have read the update notes, you’ll know that there are three different tokens (Solar, Flame, and Aqua), and the only way to reliably farm them right now is completing story missions and challenges in the Athenyx Realm. Basically, just play normally, but in a new region.

This is much easier said than done, however. The units here are extremely powerful to the point where even players who spend a lot of time and/or money are also struggling. This is partly because there are new modifiers for these challenges too, which are the following:

  • Spirits & Traits Disabled
  • Only one unit allowed
  • Only far units can be placed
  • Only close units can be placed
  • Only bosses will spawn
  • Enemies will split on death with a fraction of their health recovered

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Farming challenges and story missions isn’t the only thing you need to consider when you want to start grinding up these tokens. You should also keep in mind that you can only bring three units into the Athenyx realm.

Since almost all of the meta units at the moment are almost all hybrid types, this means that you will need to also somehow have some really strong ground units ready and waiting. One of each type is what people usually bring.

This means that the absolute best unit to bring with you to the Athenyx realm is going to be something like The Pro Gamer, also typically referred to as “SJW” (Sung Jin-woo) in the community. Cursed Berserker Paladin and Aether Knight might be a decent options too.

If you don’t have any such units, check out our guide on how to trade in update 4 part 2 of Anime Defenders. While this is made with the previous update in mind, all of the tips still ring true today and will likely help you get a good secret rarity ground unit.

Tethering Units

One important thing to note about the Athenyx realm is that anything that you get from pulling the special banners in this area will not go with you to the main world if you leave through the portal.

This is because they all require an item known as the Athenyx tether before you can bring them out of the realm. These are all earned through the Athenyx Battlepass.

So, that’s another thing you will need to grind for as well. This is different from the normal battle pass, and it can only be viewed while inside the Athenyx realm. Tokens can also be acquired from it, and in pretty huge quantities.

Both the free and paid paths of the Athenyx Battlepass have tethers in them. On top of that, they each have different rarities. My guess is that this means you can only tether units that have the same rarity as the tether itself.

For example, there is an item called the Athenyx’s Tether (Secret). The assumption here is that this can only be used to tether a Secret unit pulled from one of the three special banners that you will be spending your hard-earned tokens on.

Ironically enough, some of the secrets that you can get by summoning using tokens are also hybrid types. So, if you manage to get one and slot them into your team, they still won’t do anything against burrow units.

That wraps up this guide, as the only tip we (and anybody else) can give you is to just have the best possible team with at least one ground unit. With enough negative feedback from the community, the developers might adjust Athenyx content to become more accessible, but we don’t know for sure.

In the meantime, we also have a best unit tier list for Update 5 of Anime Defenders article, so be sure to check it out! That should help you decide what combination of three units to bring with you for this new realm!
