Avowed is inching closer towards its global release date, and if you are just starting the game for the first time, you might be wondering what abilities to go for as you progress through the beginning of it. In this guide, we will be going through what abilities you should consider getting first depending on your playstyle and more.
Best Skills to Unlock First
There are a wide range of abilities to unlock in the game, and you get one point to allocate into them whenever you level up. Since there are a lot of ability trees to consider in the game, we will go through the ideal ones to get first in each one.
Fighter Skill Tree
As far as fighter abilities go, the best thing to go for first is likely going to be Charge. Not only does this help you interrupt enemies who are either defending or just in the middle of attacking, but it also provides some utility as it can let you destroy certain walls.
Shield Bash is something to consider getting alongside Charge, as it does roughly the same thing in combat. If you have trouble maintaining the resources to use it regularly, then skip it for now.
Armored Grace is another one that is worth getting early as it reduces the stamina penalty of both medium and heavy armor. If you are playing as a mainly melee character, then you will benefit greatly from getting this as early as you possibly can.
Constant Recovery is great for melee builds too. This lets you regenerate a bit of health whenever you take damage, which is going to be quite often while you’re duking it out up close. Toughness is worth looking into if you want more health as well.
Finally, Barbaric Shout is really powerful as it lets you deal a lot of stun. It also makes your attacks uninterruptable throughout the buff’s full duration, which is perfect for people who have a very aggressive playstyle.

Ranger Skill Tree
When it comes to ranger abilities, your early options are mainly rooted in crowd control and mobility. If you caught on to that hint, then you know that the first ability we are recommending is Tanglefoot. It basically roots enemies in a certain radius, rendering them vulnerable to your attacks.
Survivalist is nice to have if you love buffing yourself with food, but you can skip it if you do not rely on them too much or at all. Parry, on the other hand,is a great passive that will let you hit counter attacks once you get the timing down. If you struggle with perfect blocks, consider the next ones instead…
Evasive reduces the stamina cost of dodging, which is a great alternative to blocking and parrying. Upgrading this later on will further reduce the cost too.
Piercing Thrusts can be great if you’re a melee fighter, as it increases the damage of power attacks for certain weapons. On the flip side, Marksmanship is great if you prefer using ranged weapons instead, as it increases your damage with guns and bows by a significant amount.
Shadowing Beyond is one more thing to consider getting first if you like being stealthy or just need to quickly escape from a rough fight.

Wizard Skill Tree
Wizards, as you would expect, will be casting a lot of spells throughout the course of a playthrough. As such, getting Armored Essence first should be your priority, as it will decrease the essence penalty of light and medium armor.
As far as damaging spells go, it really boils down to personal preference. At the very least, you might consider getting Minor Missiles to start with just because it is incredibly straightforward and can be used frequently. Jolting Touch is worth looking into if you deal with crowds often.
Arcane Veil is another great choice early on. It makes your spell casting completely uninterruptible while also boosting your damage reduction by a significant amount, letting you tank a bit of damage if needed. When upgraded later on, you can even use it to reflect projectiles that hit you.
Finally, Corrosive Siphon might be worth looking into if you need a bit of healing for yourself. When fully upgraded later on, it even lets you generate temporary health if your HP is already full.

And those are just some recommendations on what abilities to unlock first when you start the game. At the end of the day, it just boils down to what playstyle you have and what skills look the most appealing to you.
Only a handful of these are what we would consider “must haves”, such as Armored Grace or Arcane Veil. Almost everything else is up to whatever resonates with you the most. There are a lot of silly builds you can experiment with, so make sure to read all of the ability descriptions!
