Dark and Darker is a free to play dungeon crawler that lets you go deeper and deeper into a dungeon that’s not only filled with dark creatures like skeletons and demons, but also with other players that are looking to hurt you in the worst ways possible. So can how you fight back against these menacing foes when you’re just starting the game? Luckily, there are ways to get an advantage over your enemies in this game. In this guide, I will show you how you can fight all enemies on Crypt and Inferno.
How To Fight All Enemies on Crypt & Inferno
There are over 20 enemies that you can find in the Crypt and Inferno maps. Each enemy will require a bit of finesse in order to successfully take them down. That, and some skill. We will go through each enemy once by one to discover how you can properly take down these enemies without breaking a sweat (or losing health).
Skeleton Footman
The Skeleton Footman is one of the more basic enemies you will encounter in the game. They are the easiest enemies to fight in the entire game, as they don’t have a lot of health and are pretty slow when attacking. The Skeleton Footman has two attacks: diagonal slash and horizontal slash.
Simply wait for the enemy to attack and step back to avoid the hit. While the Skeleton Footman is in mid-animation, go in and start hitting the Skeleton Footman as much as you can. Bear in mind that the Nightmare version will chain the two attacks together, so be sure to watch out for that attack.
Skeleton Guardsmen
This is another basic enemy you will encounter in the game. The Skeleton Guardsmen holds a shield this time on its left arm while holding a sword on the right. That means if you try to attack it head on or to its left, you will instead hit the shield. Sometimes, it will even counter attack and hit you with a diagonal slash.
Simply use the same tactic of baiting its attack and punish the enemy with an attack, preferably on its right side to avoid hitting the shield. Bear in mind that the Skeleton Guardsmen in Nightmare difficulty will have an electrified shield, meaning that you will take damage if your attack hits the shield.
Skeleton Axeman
Another Skeleton enemy is the Skeleton Axeman. This enemy has different attacks compared to the last two skeletons. This time, the Skeleton Axeman will lunge forward and do a crushing attack. The other attack is a horizontal slash that can hit anyone in a 180 degree angle, making this one the most deadliest out of all attacks.
However, this one is easy to fight. Simply hug the Skeleton Axeman and keep circling around it until it attacks. When it does, you will be able to avoid its attacks and deliver a swift attack back. The Nightmare version, much like the Skeleton Footman, will attack you with a two hit combo. Simply use the circle method and you will be just fine.
Skeleton Spearman
Another Skeleton with a long weapon, the Skeleton Spearman will either skewer you with its forward lunge, bonk you in the head with a vertical attack, or cut you in half with its horizontal sweep attack. Just like the Axeman, use the circle method. Hug the Skeleton Spearman and keep circling around to avoid its attacks while also doing attacks of your own to get its health down.
The Nightmare version is able to do a combo with the lunge stab attack and the horizontal sweep attack. Again, use the circle strafe method to deal with this enemy quickly.
Skeleton Swordsman
A upgraded version of the Skeleton Footman, the Skeleton Swordsman wields a broadsword that can attack with right or left horizontal attacks. It also has a two hit combo attack where it swings from left to right. These attacks can be easily dodged by implementing the bait and punish tactic, which you can do by waiting for the Swordsman to attack and then back up before following it up with a strong attack.
The Nightmare version only has a third attack added to the combo, in which the Skeleton Swordsman does a low 360 degree attack. It’s easy to dodge as you only really need to jump over it.
Skeleton Crossbowman
The next enemy utilizes ranged attacks. The Skeleton Crossbowman will shoot you using a crossbow, which he reloads after a single shot. You can easily tell when the enemy is about to shoot as it aims the crossbow at you before firing. You can easily step to the side and rush forward to deliver swift attacks that can take it down.
There is no Nightmare version of this enemy yet, but there might be one in future updates.
Skeleton Archer
Unlike the Skeleton Crossbowman, the Skeleton Archer is capable of attacking more than once. It has the standard single shot arrow, and then it has a the double shot arrow attack where it will shoot two arrows consecutively. Similar to the Skeleton Crossbowman, simply side step and then attack immediately.
The Nightmare version only adds an additional third arrow when attacking, which can again be easily countered by a side step.
Skeleton Mage
This ranged fighter uses magic this time. The Skeleton Mage is capable of only one attack, which includes a fireball that will be thrown towards you. If you manage to get hit or if it hits a wall or floor, it will leave behind a damage over time area that can deal damage if you stand near it. Similar to the other range attackers, side stepping is the key.
The Nightmare version doesn’t exist yet. Again, might be another future update that the developers will look into.
Skeleton Champion
The Skeleton Champion is a mini boss that can appear in the game. It’s a combination of the Skeleton Swordsman and Skeleton Guardsmen, as it appears with a broadsword and a shield. This specific enemy has multiple combos that can be countered by simply baiting the attacks and waiting for the combos to end before rushing in and punishing the Skeleton Champion.
The Skeleton Champion has no Nightmare version as it is already powerful, but I do recommend that you fight this enemy in a much more open space. The Skeleton Champion delivers wide horizontal attacks that can deal a lot of damage if you get stuck on objects, so be sure to lure it into an open area.
Mummy
The Mummy is as fairly easy and slow enemy to maneuver around. It only has three attacks: a right swipe, a left swipe, and a lunge attack. There’s nothing fancy needed to be done here for this enemy, as all you need to do is just simply bait the attack and then punish the enemy when it is in mid animation.
The Nightmare version still has the same attacks, but its damage and speed is increased. So you better watch out because it will swipe at you really quickly and take half of your health, especially the lunge attack.
Spider Mummy
Spider Mummies are quite possibly the weakest enemies in the game. It can be taken down with one attack and it even only has one attack, which is a weak poke. However, Spider Mummies are dangerous in numbers, and you can easily get overwhelmed by them if you are not careful. When this happens, simply stand on something tall. They won’t reach you and attack you.
The Nightmare version features a slow debuff that will be inflicted on you when they hit you, leaving you vulnerable to other Spider Mummies or other enemies to come in and attack you. Again, stay on tall surfaces to avoid their attacks.
Zombie
Zombies are some of the most annoying enemies in the game. They have a couple of melee attacks that can be easily countered with a bait and punish tactic, but it’s the range one that will grind your gears. When you get close to the Zombie, it will release a green gas that will roam around the area and damage anyone that is in the gas.
This can be serious trouble if there is more than one Zombie, which is why it’s recommended to try and get rid of them as fast as possible to avoid more green gas from being released. The Nightmare version is even worse, as it releases two green gas that will roam around.
Mimic
The Mimic is a classic enemy that most people will know. It is a monster disguised as a chest that when opened, it will launch and try to bite the enemy. That is its only attack, which can easily be countered by side stepping. Bear in mind that the Nightmare Mimic can lunge farther, so side stepping really is the key to counter the Mimic.
Death Skull
Another enemy that only has one attack, the Death Skull is a flying skull that will dash towards you to attack you. Not much to say about this enemy as it is easily countered by a simple side step. The Nightmare version, however, will be able to dash at you twice. It’s even worse when you are surrounded by them as well.
Side stepping won’t be enough to fight a Death Skull when in Nightmare mode. You will need to side step the first attack and then back up as well. The dash range is still the same, so you can easily avoid the attack.
Giant Dragonfly
This giant insect is not too hard to deal with. The Giant Dragonfly only attacks by spraying acid at you in a fan motion. Either from right to left or left to right. Simply jumping up can counter the attack and get you close to the enemy to take it down. No Nightmare version yet, so you’re safe.
Wraith
The Wraith has two attacks that can easily be countered. The first attacks is an attack with the cleaver in its hand that swipes to the right. You can easily counter it by using either bait and punish or side stepping. For the second attack, which is a dash attack, utilize the side stepping method. There is no Nightmare version for this enemy yet.
Demon Berserker
The Demon Berserker is a sword wielding creature that can attack up to 10 times in one combo. Many have died to this monster since many attack the creature before its 10 hit combo stops. The counter to this will require skill and some finesse to pull off. When the Demon Berserker starts swinging, make sure you are crouched down under its attacks and lean your head back so that you are looking up at him.
This is to avoid getting your head being hit as it can still hit you while crouched down during its attacks. When it starts swinging, alternate between his swings. When he swings to the left, move to his right. When he swings to his right, move to the left. Do this until its combo stops and you can attack.
There is a Nightmare version that does all of the same things, but it ends the combo with a 360 horizontal attack. When this happens, remain in your crouched position, as the attack will miss.
Demon Centaur
The Demon Centaur has a total of three attacks: a lunging dash attack, a horizontal sweep attack, and a diagonal slash. It can combo its attacks when given the chance, so it’s best to avoid these attacks by side stepping. If you’re skilled enough, you can bait the attack and punish it. There is no Nightmare version for this monster yet.
Demon Bat
This flying enemy is able to attack with one move, and that is a dash attack that, when it lands, will knockback whoever is hit. The Demon Bat can do this move up to 3 times, especially in Nightmare mode. You can counter it by side stepping, but be sure to move quick as again, it can do the move more than 3 times.
Speaking of the Nightmare version, do not get hit by this enemy. You will be inflicted with slow and you will most certainly get swarmed if there are other enemies present.
Demon Dog
The last enemy on this list is a Demon Dog. These enemies have two attacks: a lunging chomp and basic bite attack. Both of these attacks can be countered by either side stepping or using bait and punish. Normally, it’s not a hard enemy. But in Nightmare mode, it will have an electrified collar that will attack you when you hit it.
When you are playing Nightmare mode, always either hit the head or the rear of the dog. Never go for the middle as you might hit the collar on accident.
