If you’re scratching your head wondering where the Strangelet Capsule is during the Edge of Fate campaign of Destiny 2, you’re not alone. This mission has tripped up a bunch of us, thanks in part to some super vague objective markers and a weirdly hidden route through the Outer Steppes. But don’t worry. I’ve run through this section a couple of times, and in this guide, I’ll walk you step-by-step through locating and acquiring the Strangelet Capsule from the Outer Steppes. Whether the quest marker is bugging out or you just want a clean route, I’ve got you covered.
Locate & Acquire Strangelet Capsule From Outer Steppes | Edge of Fate
You’ll start off in the Outer Steppes, a marked zone just a short walk from the mission’s entry point. But even though it’s nearby, the mission objective isn’t exactly straightforward. You’re going to need to:
- Defeat two Exile captains
- Use Matterspark vehicles
- Navigate some terrain that feels like a maze
- Possibly get confused by the objective marker (like I did)
- Use a Relocator Relay to bypass a terrain wall
- And finally, complete a mission that unlocks the capsule
Let’s break it down.

Step 1: Head to the Outer Steppes
Pull up your map and you’ll see that Outer Steppes is a real location near the beginning of the campaign path. Make your way there, and once you enter, get ready to fight.
There’ll be a bunch of Exile enemies waiting for you, including Stasis and Strand variants. You can either take them all out or just dodge through to reach your goal faster. Personally, I like clearing them, it gives you breathing room and avoids unnecessary deaths while exploring.
Step 2: Defeat the Two Captains
Now for the main part of the mission, taking out two different captains. These are your target enemies to progress the quest.
First Captain Location
From the spawn point in Outer Steppes, look for a Matterspark charge (it’s like a little ride-on vehicle). Grab it, then follow the path toward the left. It’ll lead you into a structure where the first captain is chilling. Take them down, it’s not a particularly tough fight, and you’re halfway there.
Second Captain Location
After the first one’s down, hop back on another Matterspark to save time and head toward the second captain’s location. It’s on the opposite side, but the ride will make it quicker.
Again, not a crazy fight, just keep moving and using cover. Once you defeat the second captain, you’re done with the combat portion of this step, and ready to move on to the actual puzzle-y part.
Step 3: Navigating the Glitched Marker (Stacks Area)
Now, if your marker’s acting weird, you’re not crazy, it’s a known issue.
Once you pass through the Matterspark tunnel and the train, you’ll end up in an area called The Stacks. This is where most players get lost.
Here’s what to do:
- Defeat the Exile enemies in the area.
- Look for a hole directly in front of the spawn point, drop down into it.
- Inside, you’ll find two barrier generators. Destroy both.
- Once done, use the Relocator Relay nearby to teleport past the wall that was previously blocking you.
From this point, the markers and objectives work normally again. Just keep your eye out for more Relocators and Matterspark stations, you’ll need both to move around efficiently.
Final Step: Complete the Morphology Mission
Once you’ve cleared all that and advanced the objective, you’ll unlock the final phase: a mission called Morphology.
This is where you really get to use the new Mattermorph ability, which lets you manipulate terrain in wild ways. Finish Morphology, and you’ll be rewarded with the Outer Steppes Strangelet Capsule, letting you continue through the Edge of Fate campaign.
Wrap-Up
The Outer Steppes Strangelet Capsule quest is one of those classic Destiny 2 moments where the marker leads you to a dead end, or worse, loops you in circles. But once you know where to go (and where to look for hidden holes, teleports, and captains), the mission becomes way more manageable. Up next, if you’re hunting for a powerful exotic weapon, you might want to go for the Final Warning, an exotic sidearm with some serious kick. Check out our guide for how to get it.
