Read enough Lovecraftian literature and you’ll slowly notice that most of these stories are set in times where the internet doesn’t exist, why? Because nothing is more maddening than discovering something special or cursed without you being able to share the experience with somebody else. That and people with internet access are fascinated with the unknown too much now instead of being actually afraid of it. In Dredge you’re free from this plague, the only thing you have while out at sea are your wits, or whatever’s left of them. In this guide we’ll show you the negative effects of letting your sanity slip one too many times and how you can combat it to survive.

One of the many things that will destroy whatever’s left of your mental faculties will be sailing at night, but you know that you need to do this in order to progress through the game. Sure what you find will be worth your while at times but insurance doesn’t cover beasts that can’t be explained by Science, so here’s what you can to do mend your sanity and panic less.

There are some books that you’ll get earlier on that will lessen the negative effects of all the spells you cast, another practical way of keeping your sanity in check is to simply not sail during the night when you don’t need to.

When you do need to go outside, pay attention to the clock on the middle of the screen. A blue eye will appear telling you that it’s not feeling it now Mr. Krabs and would like to dock soon. This happens when you’re just sailing from one point to another without venturing into the unknown too much.

You should be on the lookout for green and brown, the former means that things are ramping up while the latter is your final warning to turn back and get some rest. Red means you’re in an utter state of panic and you should get out of there while you still can, not everyone is fond of is tentacles coming out of the marshes so yeah you’ll definitely lose some sleep over that.

To regain your humanity, or whatever’s left of you, rest at any dock that looks safe enough. It’s better to head to a place that actually exists to make sure nothing will go bump in the night the moment you shut your eyes. Having better lights will also decrease the amount of panic you’re getting, visit the Shipwright Shop and buy one for $100 or get the Flame of the Sky from the Ancient Lighthouse for the best protection possible.

After a good night’s rest you should be in good enough shape again to do another night run, don’t let the eye stay red for too long if you know what’s good for you! Now go out there and consider getting therapy, if you live to tell the tale that is.
