Starting a new MMO or going back to an old one after many years can be daunting. Specially if there’s a lot of new things that you need to learn. That’s part of the fun though and sometimes the journey beats the destination in these types of games. Just leveling around and enjoying the game with other people is what makes MMOs great!

In Elder Scrolls Online the game can have a lot of content to go through. This can be too much for a new player, or a returning one who hasn’t seen the new expansions. In this guide we’ll give you some tips and tricks on progressing through this huge MMO!

All Zones Guide – Everything You Need To Know For 2023 | Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls online is an MMO, and because of that there’s tons of content that you can go through. Still, you’ll need to know where to go to start your adventure. It might be a sandbox, but you’ll need to know how to play with the sand first before you enjoy things. Here are some tips to help you start your ESO journey.

Alliances and Races

The Elder Scrolls series prides itself with a lot of different and interesting races in the lore. This is also true in Elder Scrolls online. When you create a character, you also pick your race, but only certain races can be with certain alliances.

Picking alliances doesn’t really change much except for your map progression and in large-scale PVP. It will affect your starting area though so keep that in mind if you want to start with friends.

Each race also has different passives, but they don’t really matter unless you’re min-maxing. If you’re just starting out, then go for any race as long as it’s in the alliance you want. Any race can be any class in this game and can be in any role like Tank, Healer or DPS.

Classes

This is where the main thing about your character comes in. Certain classes can be great in certain roles while others aren’t really suited for it. For example, Nightblade and Sorcerers are really good at Single Target DPS while Templars are the best in Healing.

This is the choice where I advise you to read up on the different builds you can do for the classes. Just don’t go overboard and try to min-max as much as possible unless that’s your goal from the start. There are certain things that you should know about each class like how some Necromancer skills and spells are illegal to use in towns. That means guards will try to arrest you for doing necromancy which is in-line with the lore.

Map Progression

For those who don’t know, in Elder Scrolls Online there’s 3 factions that you join up with. All 3 factions have their own starting areas as well as different areas to progress. So, it can get confusing on where to go next specially if there’s 3 different sides of the map to go through.

Below the map of Tamriel and the different sections of the map. It’s numbered by the story progression for each side of the game. Some areas though are not numbered and that means it’s a shared area for people to go through.

Some of these map areas are also part of the DLCs so keep that in mind. As you can see there’s a lot to go through in Elder Scrolls Online, so you’ve got your work cut out for you!

Guilds

No, not player guilds but actual in-game NPC guilds. If you’re a fan of the Elder Scrolls series then you should already know the basics like the Mages Guild, the Fighter Guild, the Dark Brotherhood and so on. You can actually join all of these guilds at the same time and get to experience the stories and quests that come along it. In our guide on guilds we go more in-depth on what each guild offers so make sure to check that out!

Attributes and CP

Elder Scrolls online takes the Skyrim approach in terms of attributes, which I personally dislike but makes it simple. You have 3 attributes and that’s Magicka, Health and Stamina.

Unlike other games though that makes it, so you mix your attributes, Elder Scrolls takes the Skyrim approach of making things too simple. Most character builds tell you to dump all the attributes to one and they’re right. You get a small boost in the other attributes as you level anyway so just place everything on your main attribute. It’s either you put everything on Stamina or Magicka.

Champion Points, or CP for short can be confusing. The max level of each character is level 50, but you can level up beyond that with your Champion levels. This will unlock different trees that you can put points on that gives you certain buffs and passives.

The thing is that these champion points are unlocked for all characters. So if you make a character that is Champion Level 150 and make new character, they too get the champion points of a 150 character. They’ll just need to level up to 50.

Using your CP depends on your character build so make sure you place them correctly!

General Tips

Since the game is an MMO, covering all the things you need to do can make this article into a novel. So instead, we’ll give you some general tips that are easy to read down below:

  • Do your Daily Quests: Daily quests are easy to do and will give you rewards and XP.
  • Go to the Riding Trainer Everyday: There’s a riding skill in the game that you can increase through the riding triainer. You can only upgrade it once a day though so do it daily!
  • Leveling a skill: The more skills you have in one skill line on your skill bar the faster it is to level that skill. That means if you have 3 Staff skills slotted it’ll level up faster than if you had one.
  • Join Events: Usually there’s an event every 3 months and with that comes unique rewards. Make sure to join these events and try to get event only items!
  • Join a Player Guild: Don’t be afraid to join a player guild and ask around. You can also use the players of a guild to teleport around as well!

Congratulations you now know some great tips for playing Elder Scrolls Online. Now go out there and try to enjoy one of the better MMOs out there!
