We all know that feeling of just running an app one day and it’s suddenly crashing and you don’t know why. Sometimes it’s because of an update from windows or from the app itself. Sometimes something went wrong on your end like a missing file or something. There’s a myriad of ways on how an application can trash, from just a one time bug to an HDD failing. We can’t really cover all of the possibilities in this guide but we’ll try to show you one of the more common issues on why OBS Studio is crashing for you.

OBS Studio 28: Fix Crashing On Windows 10/11

Always remember that it’s highly likely that the systems we have aren’t the same as yours. We may have the same windows 10 or 11 but not the same hardware or even software that’s running with it. We’ll try to make sure that we cover the most common reasons on why OBS is crashing, and if this doesn’t help then you might need to go into it deeper.

Compatibility

This can work for some people, go to your OBS executable file, right click on it and go to properties. Then go to Compatibility and check the box “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select Windows 7. Restart the program and check if it works.

Drivers

Sometimes your drivers might have something to do with the program crashing. Always check and see if all of your drivers are up to date. If you’re using your GPU for OBS then make sure that the drivers for those GPUs are up to date as well.

Windows Updates

Windows updates can be finicky, it’s a byproduct of uncontrolled spaghetti code from Windows. Check if your windows is up to date, if not then you can try to update it to see if it works. In very rare occasions certain windows updates actually break the program, again this is rare but it does happen.

This can both be a fix and a preventative measure. Make sure that your OBS is always up to date, I know sometimes OBS makes some changes to the looks that gets you confused on where things are, but it also helps with stability. If you can’t update your OBS through the application you can just uninstall it and download the latest one from their website.

These are of the most common fixes for OBS crashing on your PC, go and check what works for you. If it doesn’t work then see if a fresh re-install of the program can work. If the program can’t work with a fresh install than the problem might be deeper.
