Hogwarts Legacy is comprised of different quests that you have to finish in order to progress the story.
However, some quests won’t be readily available for you. This means you have to discover some of them before you can even get started. These are the so-called side quests.
One of the side quests that you can find in the game is the Foal of the Dead quest which will introduce you to one of the most majestic beasts in the game, the Thestrals.
In this guide, we’ll teach you how to unlock and finish this side quest.
How to Complete the Foal of the Dead Quest

The Foal of the Dead can be unlocked after you complete The Plight of the House-Elf quest given by Deek. After you complete that, Deek will give you the quest.
To start, go back to the Room of Requirement and look for Deek. Talk to him, and he will give you an instruction to catch a Thestral. Here’s how:
Catch a Male Thestral

Go to East North Ford Bog and head to the vast open space where the indicator leads you. There, you will see lots of Thestrals.
Once you see Thestrals approach you, look for a male one and cast Levioso on it. While it is levitating, get your Nab-Sack and use it to catch the beast.
It might take you a while before you can catch one, but just keep on trying until you successfully catch one.
Buy a Breeding Pen Spellcraft

Now, you have to provide a breeding pen for the Thestrals you rescued. Go to Hogsmeade and look for the Tomes and Scrolls shop.
Talk to the store owner, Thomas Brown, and look for the Breeding Pen Spellcraft and buy it for 1,000 gold.
Conjure the Breeding Pen
Once you have secured a Breeding Pen Spellcraft, go back to the Room of Requirement and report to Deek. You will then be able to conjure another room.
When you have entered the new room, open the Manage Beasts tab and select the Thestrals you have captured. You should select two Thestrals with the opposite sex.
Using your Configuration Spell, make the Breeding Pen by selecting the Beast Items and then the Breeding Pen.
Outside the Breeding Pen, you will see a board with a stand. Approach and interact with it to start the breeding process. Simply select the Thestral and they will automatically be transferred inside.
Afterward, go back to Deek to finish the quest.
